{"id":158,"date":"2009-06-25T13:52:04","date_gmt":"2009-06-25T13:52:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/major-in-classics\/"},"modified":"2025-07-29T16:56:08","modified_gmt":"2025-07-29T21:56:08","slug":"classics","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/classics\/","title":{"rendered":"Requirements for a Major in Classics"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p><strong>Requirements for a Major in Classics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>6 courses in Latin, 3 courses in Greek<br \/>or<br \/>6 courses in Greek, 3 courses in Latin<\/p>\n<p>Classics 370<\/p>\n<p>1 ancient history course (or 1 Classics GHS course)<\/p>\n<p>Students who begin one of the languages at the 231 (3rd-semester) level or higher have the option of taking 5 courses in that language, 3 courses in the other language, Classics 370, and 1 Greek or Roman history course (or 1 Classics GHS course).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intended Learning Outcomes for a Major in Classics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Students will demonstrate:\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li>advanced knowledge of one Classical language (ancient Greek or Latin) and an intermediate (or higher) knowledge of the other Classical language.<\/li>\n<li>the ability to translate and analyze ancient Greek and Latin literature in at least three genres.<\/li>\n<li>basic cultural knowledge about ancient Greece and Rome.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Distinction in Classics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To graduate with distinction in Classics, a student must demonstrate talent with classical languages and literature, skill in conducting research on a classical topic, and broad cultural knowledge about ancient Greece and Rome. Specific guidelines are available from <a href=\"mailto:groton@stolaf.edu\">Prof. Anne Groton<\/a>, Chair of the Department of Classics.
