{"id":162,"date":"2012-06-01T17:02:05","date_gmt":"2012-06-01T17:02:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/major-in-medieval-studies\/"},"modified":"2025-09-19T18:21:19","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T23:21:19","slug":"medieval-studies","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/medieval-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Requirements for a Major in Medieval Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p><strong>Requirements for a Major in Medieval Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Completion of the 4th semester (or higher) of Latin<\/li>\n<li>1 medieval literature course<\/li>\n<li>1 medieval history course<\/li>\n<li>4 electives selected from the Departments of Art &amp; Art History, Asian Studies, English, History, Music, Norwegian, Philosophy, Religion, Russian, and Theater<\/li>\n<li>1 Independent Research (or a paper written for a Level III course)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Enduring Questions 116 may be used as an elective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Intended Learning Outcomes for a Major in Medieval Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Students will demonstrate:<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"1\" type=\"1\">\n<li>intermediate-level (or higher) competence in translating Latin.<\/li>\n<li>basic knowledge (equivalent to the knowledge obtained in a Level I course) of medieval European history and literature, supplemented by basic knowledge in other areas of study (e.g., art, music, philosophy, religion) concerned with medieval Europe.<\/li>\n<li>in-depth knowledge (equivalent to the knowledge expected in a Level III course) of at least one subject area within the major.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Requirements for Distinction in Medieval Studies<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To graduate with distinction in Medieval Studies, a student must demonstrate talent with Latin, skill in conducting research on a medieval topic, and broad cultural knowledge of the medieval European world. Specific guidelines are available from <a href=\"mailto:groton@stolaf.edu\">Prof. Anne Groton<\/a>, Director of the Medieval Studies Program.
