{"id":3108,"date":"2014-12-30T17:55:52","date_gmt":"2014-12-30T23:55:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/?page_id=3108"},"modified":"2025-09-19T18:37:18","modified_gmt":"2025-09-19T23:37:18","slug":"read-more","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/read-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Classics, Greek, Latin, Ancient Studies, and Medieval Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><h2><strong>Classics at St. Olaf College<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Classics is the study of the ancient Greeks and Romans\u2014especially their languages (Greek and Latin), literature, and culture. It includes consideration of the Greeks&#8217; and Romans&#8217; own multi-racial and multi-ethnic world and their interactions with the diversity of cultures in Europe, Africa, the Near East, and Asia, from 3000 BCE through medieval times.<\/p>\n<p>St. Olaf students take Greek and Latin for a variety of reasons. Some are eager to read influential or inspiring works in the original languages. Some are preparing themselves for a particular career. \u00a0Some choose to study an ancient language because they know that it will improve their verbal and analytical skills while simultaneously satisfying the College&#8217;s language requirement.\u00a0 And some take Greek or Latin just because it is fun! What could be more exciting and more intellectually challenging than being able to decipher a text composed two or even three millennia ago?<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Classics offers a full range of courses in Greek and Latin, as well as Classics courses that examine the ancient Mediterranean world from multiple perspectives\u2014literary, artistic, historical, philosophical, theological. Five majors are available: <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/greek\/\">Greek<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/latin\/\">Latin<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/classics\/\">Classics<\/a>\u00a0(Greek and Latin combined),\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/ancient-studies\/\">Ancient Studies<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/medieval-studies\/\">Medieval Studies<\/a>. The last two are interdisciplinary.<\/p>\n<p><em>NOTE: St. Olaf&#8217;s 70-year-old program in Latin Education with Teaching Licensure has now been discontinued. Students interested in becoming K-12\u00a0 Latin (and Greek) teachers are encouraged to take Education courses and to consider enrolling in a Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) program after they graduate from St. Olaf. The Society of Classical Studies (SCS) website includes a <a href=\"https:\/\/classicalstudies.org\/education\/graduate-programs-north-america\">list<\/a> of Classics graduate programs in North America.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>St. Olaf graduates have recently completed or are enrolled in M.A., M.A.T., or Ph.D. programs in Classical Studies, Archaeology, or Medieval Studies at Bryn Mawr College, Indiana University, Pennsylvania State University, the University of Arizona, the University of British Columbia, the University of California-Los Angeles, the University of Colorado, the University of Georgia, the University of Glasgow, the University of Illinois, the University of Limerick, the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, the University of Minnesota, the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, the University of Notre Dame, the University of Oxford, the University of Southampton, the University of Texas, the University of Toronto, the University of Virginia, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Washington University in St. Louis.<\/p>\n<p>Click\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/current-student-majors\/\">here<\/a> to see a list of current St. Olaf students with declared majors in Classics, Greek, Latin, Ancient Studies, or Medieval Studies.<\/p>\n<p>St. Olaf College offers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Courses in Greek and Latin:<\/strong>\u00a0 Beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses in both\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/course-offerings-and-descriptions\/greek-latin-classics-course-descriptions\/\">Greek and Latin<\/a> are taught every semester. \u00a0(Modern Greek is not offered.) \u00a0Completion of the third semester (231) of either Greek or Latin satisfies St. Olaf&#8217;s language requirement. Students who plan to attend seminary or do graduate work in theology are encouraged to take Greek for at least four semesters. Greek 111 and Latin 111 are introductory courses. New students who have previously studied ancient Greek or Latin should take the relevant placement survey linked to the New Student Orientation (NSO) checklist (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/placement\/greek\/index.cfm?fuseaction=welcome\">ancient Greek survey<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/placement\/latin\/index.cfm?fuseaction=welcome\">Latin survey<\/a>). For the department\u2019s policy on Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Exams, click <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/general-information\/ap-ib-policy\/\">here.<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Courses in Classics: <\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/course-offerings-and-descriptions\/greek-latin-classics-course-descriptions\/\">Classics courses<\/a> focus not on the ancient languages but instead on the ancient world at large; they require no knowledge of Greek or Latin. Students who desire a broad background in the humanities often find these course attractive ways to satisfy GE requirements. At least one on-campus Classics course is offered each semester and during January term. Courses in Greek and Roman history are taught each year by members of the St. Olaf <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/history\/\">History Department<\/a>. In addition St. Olaf students have permission to take many of the courses offered by the Department of Classics at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apps.carleton.edu\/curricular\/clas\/\">Carleton College<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Three majors that emphasize\u00a0language and literature:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Students may complete a\u00a0major in ancient <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/greek\/\">Greek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/latin\/\">Latin<\/a>, or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/classics\/\">Classics<\/a> (= Greek and Latin). Outstanding senior students are invited to\u00a0pursue\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-distinction\/distinction-in-classics\/\">distinction in Classics<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Two interdisciplinary\u00a0majors:<\/strong>\u00a0 \u00a0Students may complete an\u00a0interdisciplinary major in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/ancient-studies\/\">Ancient Studies<\/a> or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-majors\/medieval-studies\/\">Medieval Studies<\/a>. Each of these majors has a core of required courses; students design the rest of the major themselves by selecting courses from different departments. Outstanding senior students are invited to pursue <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-distinction\/distinction-in-ancient-studies\/\">distinction in\u00a0Ancient Studies <\/a>or <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/requirements-for-distinction\/distinction-in-medieval-studies\/\">distinction in Medieval Studies<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opportunity for off-campus study: \u00a0<\/strong>A Classics study abroad course is offered every January;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/classics-251-description-2\/\">Classical Studies in Greece<\/a>\u00a0alternates with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/classics-253-description\/\">Classical Studies in Italy<\/a>. Students with financial need are encouraged to apply for the <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/groomis-scholarship-in-classics\/\">Groomis Scholarship in Classics<\/a>. For more about study abroad, click <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/study-abroad-opportunities\/\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opportunity to go on stage:\u00a0<\/strong>St. Olaf Classics students periodically perform an <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/st-olaf-ancient-plays\/ancient-play-history\/\">ancient Latin or Greek comedy<\/a> in a musical mixture of English and Latin, or English and Greek, taking the show on tour to other schools. The play is a non-credit-bearing, co-curricular activity, open to any student who has taken Latin or Greek. After the production is over, all cast members receive Ole Experience in Practice (OEP), and the Registrar adds &#8220;ID 300&#8221; to their transcripts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opportunity to belong to an\u00a0honor society:\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0St. Olaf is\u00a0home to a chapter of <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/delta-chi-current-members-2023-24\/\">Eta Sigma Phi<\/a>, the collegiate honorary society for Classical Studies, and has hosted the national convention four times. Chapter activities include a weekly Classics Conversation Table. In the annual <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/maureen-dallas-watkins-sight-translation-exams\/\">Maureen Dallas Watkins Contests<\/a>, St. Olaf has one of the best records of any college in the country.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Opportunity to win prizes, awards, and scholarships:<\/strong> \u00a0St. Olaf sponsors annual in-house Greek and Latin translation contests with monetary prizes and a competition for <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/awards-and-scholarships\/groomis-awards\/\">Groomis Awards<\/a> that help defray the cost of summer projects related to Classics, Ancient Studies, or Medieval Studies. The <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/awards-and-scholarships\/endowment-funds\/\">Scarseth and Grimsrud Scholarships<\/a> are awarded to junior or senior majors with academic merit\u00a0and financial need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Nationally recognized faculty: <\/strong>St. Olaf Classics <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/classics\/contact-us\/\">faculty<\/a> are respected teacher-scholars.
