Watch Streamed Event
Every November students fill the Pause Mane Stage to celebrate Diwali, the festival of lights, hosted by Celebrate South Asia! This year’s show brought in over 70 participants and more than 300 guests to support the South Asian community on campus. The show began with a solemn prayer, and continued with Dr. Debabrata Mukhopadyay’s wonderful spiritual explanation of Diwali and why it is celebrated around the world by a variety of religions. This was followed by a classical Bharatnatyam performance that showcased the beauty of a long tradition from India. During intermission guests enjoyed the delicious food catered by India Palace in Burnsville, Minnesota.
Along with the traditional story-telling of the Ramayana, the group mixed in some contemporary modern Bollywood moves that wowed the crowd. With the energy running high the program led into the fashion show which showcased many different styles of traditional wear from the south Asian region. The show then concluded with a fast-paced Bollywood number that got everyone in the dancing mood and in the high spirits of Diwali.
