Overview

Commencement Weekend is Friday through Sunday, May 22-24, 2020.

Commencement Ceremony and Ticketing

We strive to hold Commencement outdoors whenever possible.

No tickets are needed for general seating if Commencement is outdoors on the Campus Green between Mellby and Tomson Halls.  Please check the local weather forecasts and dress for the weather (i.e. rain gear, hats, umbrellas, water bottles, etc.). There is limited shade on the Campus Green.

If Commencement is indoors due to inclement weather, all seating in Skoglund Auditorium will require tickets. Every graduating senior participating in the ceremony is guaranteed at least three tickets. Seniors must reserve indoor tickets online in March or April, 2020.

The location of the Commencement ceremony is announced at Baccalaureate (Sunday, 9 a.m.), posted on the college’s home page (if inside Skoglund), posted in Buntrock Commons, and available through the switchboard at 507-786-2222.

Accessible seating including sign language interpreting is available on the Campus Green and in Skoglund Center Auditorium. Tickets for this section are required whether the ceremony is indoors or outside. Please contact the Events Management Office at 507-786-3811 or commencement@stolaf.edu to acquire tickets for this section or with any questions regarding accommodations.  Hearing devices are available for guests at both the indoor and outdoor ceremony locations.

Commencement seating opens at 2:15 p.m. at all locations.  The ceremony usually lasts about 2 hours.

The Commencement ceremony will be live-streamed to Viking Theater in Buntrock Commons, Tomson Hall 280, and Boe Memorial Chapel whether it is held indoors or outside. No tickets are required for these venues, but arrive early to ensure seating.

Registration for Housing and Events

Please register your party together if possible, and be sure to include your graduating senior.  We offer on-site registration in Buntrock Commons on Saturday and Sunday of Commencement Weekend, but we do recommend you register online by May 25, 2019 to ensure ticket and housing availability.  Click here for detailed registration information and a list of Frequently Asked Questions.

Contact the Events Management Office with with any questions or concerns by calling 507-786-3811 or by sending an email to commencement@stolaf.edu.

Senior Rehearsal and Line Up

All graduating seniors participating in Commencement MUST meet at Tostrud field house in cap and gown with tassel on Sunday, May 24, 2020 at 2 p.m.

Rehearsal is held in Tostrud no matter where the ceremony is held. Commencement exercises are complicated and exacting. It is extremely important that you arrive on time so you will be in the right place at the right moment to receive your diploma. During rehearsal, the marshals will talk you through the afternoon’s proceedings step by step: processing, seating, handling yourself on the platform, posing for photographs, post-Commencement procedures, etc. Honor cords will be distributed during rehearsal and water will be available.

Photos and Videos

St. Olaf works with GradImages to photograph graduating seniors as they leave the platform. Visit GradImages to pre-register your permanent email address prior to Commencement, and they will contact you as soon as your photos are ready for viewing. GradImages will contact you by mail following the ceremony with information on ordering photographs. For further information or to view your photos after Commencement, visit gradimages.com or call 800-261-2576.

Digital downloads and DVDs of the Commencement ceremony stream may be purchased for $25 (applicable tax and shipping included). Please allow 6–8 weeks for delivery.
