Mellon foundation from 2017-2021. This primer was designed as an evolving resource to provide the St. Olaf community with shared understanding of key terms and ideas in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) work. The original document represents a shared effort by faculty and staff; we owe particular thanks to Marc David, Visiting Assistant Professor of Sociology and Anthropology. Other assumptions in play here include:<\/h4>\n\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-stat\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-stat__number u-fc-cranberry\" data-depth=\"0\" data-name=\"statistic\" data-livetext=\"true\" data-index=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t1\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"c-stat__desc\" data-depth=\"0\" data-name=\"description\" data-livetext=\"true\" data-index=\"0\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThat treating individuals equitably \u2014 in addition to treating them equally\u2014 is among the most valued ideals that an institution of higher learning should pursue.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-stat\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-stat__number u-fc-cranberry\" data-depth=\"0\" data-name=\"statistic\" data-livetext=\"true\" data-index=\"1\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t2\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"c-stat__desc\" data-depth=\"0\" data-name=\"description\" data-livetext=\"true\" data-index=\"1\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThat processes of social stratification inexorably distribute resources, skills, and opportunities unequally, a skewed distribution with a profound impact on educational access and achievement.\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"c-stat\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"c-stat__number u-fc-cranberry\" data-depth=\"0\" data-name=\"statistic\" data-livetext=\"true\" data-index=\"2\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t3\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n\n\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"c-stat__desc\" data-depth=\"0\" data-name=\"description\" data-livetext=\"true\" data-index=\"2\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tThat an institution\u2019s practices and policies are culturally embedded: While much about them is readily recognized, much is also implicit and sedimented in taken-for-granted routines and rationales. In particular, the implications of the principal key terms \u2014 diversity, equity, and inclusion \u2014 for institutional practice are already the subject of reflection in many segments of the campus. In defining them substantively, these iterations are intended to stimulate further thought and debate. Likewise, in light of <em>To Include Is to Excel\u2019s<\/em> focus on pedagogy and curriculum, the definition of inclusive excellence is proposed as a lofty yet crucial goal to guide our efforts. This list is provisional and partial \u2014 it does not attempt to be comprehensive \u2014 and will likely grow with time.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\n\t\t\t\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t\t\t<div\n\t\t\tclass=\"is-style-default site-section site-panel__accordion panel panel-accordion site-section__bg--white\"\n\t\t\tdata-depth=\"\"\n\t\t\tdata-js-panel=\"accordion\"\n\t\t>\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"is-style-default site-section__inner l-wrapper site-section__bg--white\">\n\t\n\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<header class=\"is-style-default site-section__header\">\n\n\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"is-style-default site-section__title h3\" id=\"what-does-dei-stand-for\" data-name=\"title\" data-livetext data-depth=\"0\" data-index=\"0\">What does DEI stand for?<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t<\/header>\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\n\t<div class=\"is-style-default site-grid site-grid__wrapper\">\n\n\t\t<div class=\"is-style-default site-grid__col\">\n\t\t\t\n<figure class=\"is-style-default c-caption\">\n\n\t\n\n\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"is-style-default t-content\" data-name=\"content\" data-index=\"0\" data-autop=\"true\" data-livetext>\n\t\t\t<p>DEI is the acronym for <strong>Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion<\/strong>, used by practitioners to evoke the broad range of practical reforms necessary to dismantle ingrained discriminatory patterns and achieve equitable relationships. As a matter of institutional practice, the term also refers to the presence of historically underrepresented groups (HUGS) and to policies enabling their access to educational opportunities. The College\u2019s commitment to an annual increase in the student body\u2019s racial and ethnic diversity is an example of such initiatives. In higher education and non-profit organizations, a clear trend exists to distinguish policies and procedures related to diversity from other dimensions of practice, such as those of inclusion and equity. This is because it is possible for an institution with a diverse membership to lack measures to foster the inclusion, or full acceptance and participation, of all its members. Equitable practices are designed to accommodate differences in students\u2019 learning \u2014 and not to treat all students the same. Equity differs from equality, which refers to an evenly distributed access to educational resources and opportunities. Beyond offering access, inclusion involves an active, intentional, and ongoing engagement with diversity \u2014 in the curriculum, in staffing, in procedures and policies, and across all institutional units with which individuals might connect \u2014 in ways that enable them to communicate their views and share in decision making. By extension, inclusion also implies majority-group members taking the initiative to access non-majority voices in the latter\u2019s own settings and through their own informational channels, such that they expand their understanding of relevant issues in their relationships. Generally, those who enjoy privilege do so without being aware of it.
