{"id":917,"date":"2019-08-27T08:27:14","date_gmt":"2019-08-27T13:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/equity-inclusion\/?page_id=917"},"modified":"2025-01-23T14:50:41","modified_gmt":"2025-01-23T20:50:41","slug":"plan","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/community-belonging\/the-council\/plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Plan for Community and Belonging"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><h3 style=\"text-align: center;\">A Plan for Equity and Inclusion at St. Olaf<br \/>\n2019<\/h3>\n<p><em>Develop and sustain an inclusive, culturally-competent community that intentionally engages, uplifts and celebrates all diversity; removes barriers to full participation in the St. Olaf community and to a St. Olaf education; provides opportunities for students and faculty and staff members to thrive at St. Olaf; and h<\/em><em>olds all members of the St. Olaf community accountable for the realization of this plan.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0 Ensure the development of an inclusive, culturally-humble and culturally-competent community.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a.\u00a0 Provide regular, on-going education and training.<br \/>\nb.\u00a0 Provide specialized training for hiring managers, supervisors, and advisors, and for students and faculty members engaged in off-campus learning.<br \/>\nc.\u00a0 Communicate visible and credible messages of belonging in the college\u2019s signature events, and in spaces and public artwork.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0 I<\/strong><strong>ntentionally engage and uplift all diversity so as to enrich learning, student life and worship, community organizations and events, and work at St. Olaf.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a.\u00a0 In the curriculum and classroom setting, explore and engage with diversity and related social, political, religious, and\/or cultural dynamics where appropriate.<br \/>\nb.\u00a0 Enhance opportunities for inter-faith and inter-religious partnerships and events.<br \/>\nc.\u00a0 Expand opportunities for intentional and informed engagement between those of dissimilar backgrounds, identities and viewpoints.<br \/>\nd.\u00a0 Explore issues related to the complexity of our identities through enhanced programming of existing centers and through collaborative programming among them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0 Ensure that students, staff, and faculty have support and opportunities to thrive at St. Olaf and beyond<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a.\u00a0 Strengthen and advance a culture of inclusion through the development of networks and affinity groups, orientation of new community members to promote connections;<br \/>\nidentify points of welcome.<br \/>\nb.\u00a0 Invest in robust advising and academic support services.<br \/>\nc.\u00a0 Further under-represented students\u2019 post-baccalaureate preparation through vocational and scholarship\/fellowship programming.<br \/>\nd.\u00a0 Enhance support systems to retain under-represented members of the tenure-track faculty and staff.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4.\u00a0 Identify and revise policies, processes and practices that present barriers to education and work.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a.\u00a0 Eliminate any institutional barriers to the full participation of students in high-quality co-curricular programs and activities, so that the racial, ethnic, and gender<br \/>\ncomposition of these programs and activities is similar to that of the student body as a whole (an existing goal of the St. Olaf Strategic Plan).<br \/>\nb.\u00a0 Examine campus-wide communications, policies, processes and practices; gather user feedback.<br \/>\nc.\u00a0 Examine personnel processes for faculty and staff, including hiring, training and development, performance and tenure and promotion reviews for elements of bias.<br \/>\nd.\u00a0 Collaborate with the local community on matters touching on the needs of students and employees as Northfield residents as these involve issues related to diversity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.\u00a0 Hold ourselves accountable for the success of the plan through assessment, reporting, action, and celebration.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">a.\u00a0 Gather and regularly review and evaluate information from the community about the campus climate.
