I joined St. Olaf two years ago as an Associate Dean of Admissions\/Director of Multicultural Recruitment. I was fortunate to meet many students, guidance counselors, and parents and educate them about the St. Olaf experience. In my new role, I will work closely with the President\u2019s Leadership Team (PLT), faculty, staff, and students. In addition, I serve on several committees while serving as a resource for academic and administrative departments.\u00a0 The main goals of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Collaborate with Human Resources to recruit and retain diverse faculty and staff and enhance employee engagement for faculty and staff<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Work with Admissions and Financial Aid to ensure the Class of 2027 reflects the goal to increase the percentage of domestic Black, Indigenous, and students of color<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Advance the work of Co-Creating an Inclusive Community<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provide professional development (training) to faculty, staff, and students\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I charge each member of the community to embrace all dimensions of diversity and inclusion to make St. Olaf College a welcoming environment. Every member of this community must be treated as a valued member. Please step outside your comfort zone and expand your worldview through opportunities at the College and local communities. Miles<br \/>\n<\/span>Interim Vice President, Equity and Inclusion<\/p>\n<p><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3790\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.stolaf.edu\/equity-inclusion\/files\/2022\/08\/RMilespic-300x170.jpg?resize=300%2C170&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h3><b>This Summer at St. Olaf<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/sss\/summer-bridge-program\/\"><strong>Student Support Services- Summer Bridge<\/strong><\/a> prepared 40 students<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to begin their St. Olaf journey <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><b>Kudos to Dr. Greening\u2019s team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/upward\/\"><strong>Trio Upward Bound<\/strong><\/a> worked with 109 rising high school sophomores through seniors, and 21 incoming first-year students were also part of Summer Bridge. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><b>Kudos to Mari\u2019s Avaloz\u2019s team<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admissions partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/collegehorizons.org\/about\/\"><strong>College Horizons<\/strong><\/a> to virtually promote the St. Olaf experience\u00a0 to 155 Native American high school students. I was able to work with this group in July.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Admissions joined the<strong> National Hispanic Institute Summer program<\/strong> in Texas to promote the St. Olaf experience to over 120 juniors and seniors.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(<\/span><b>Kudos to Gladys Cortes<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.possefoundation.org\/posse-facts\"><strong>Posse Students <\/strong><\/a>\u00a0\u2014 <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">20 students will join St. Olaf this fall. I was fortunate enough to be part of the selection process and attend the summer retreats. Students will be mentored by Dr. Eric Hazlett and Dr. Catherine Ramirez.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mnprivatecolleges.org\/giving\/black-mens-success-initiative\/eddie-phillips-scholarship-african-american-men\">Eddie Phillips Scholars<\/a><\/strong>\u2014<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eddie Phillips Scholars is a scholarship for African American men that includes advising, networking, funding for internships, etc.\u00a0 In August our student, Chris McDonald &#8217;24, conducted a leadership presentation. Isaiah Fitzsimmons &#8217;23, Siegel Howard III &#8217;23, and Josh Houston &#8217;23 are also part of the program.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Twenty three <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/mcnair\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/mcnair\/&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1662558491498000&amp;usg=AOvVaw2VUkb7hWXM9Ys0Rjv2c8yU\">St. Olaf TRIO McNair Scholars<\/a> engaged in research and internship experiences at St. Olaf and off campus during the summer of 2022. This summer marks the 15th summer of McNair Research at St. Olaf College! The St. Olaf TRIO McNair grant has been awarded for another 5 years!
