This is one of my favorite times of year in Minnesota as the colors are changing and the air is crisp. It is a beautiful time to walk around the hill and meet a new member of the community. October is LGBTQIA+ History Month, a time to uplift the members of our LGBTQIA+ community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Below are resources that support mental health and well-being:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.outfront.org\/crisis-anti-violence#about\">Outfront Minnesota Anti-Violence Program<\/a> is a broad-based effort to end violence and harassment against and within LGBTQIA+ communities in Minnesota. They work in collaboration with survivors and community members to build safety and power \u2014 as well as opportunities for support and healing \u2014 through crisis intervention services, systems advocacy, counseling, community education, and outreach.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/taylorcenter\/\">Taylor Center for Equity and Inclusion<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/counseling-center\/\">Counseling Center<\/a> offers a variety of services and programs, including individual counseling, group counseling, workshops, consultation, and referrals.\u00a0Services are provided free to all currently enrolled St. Olaf students.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/wellness\/\" target=\"_blank\">Wellness Center<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mentalhealthfirstaid.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mental Health First Aid<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/ministry\/\">College Ministry<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I wish everyone a wonderful month of October.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.stolaf.edu\/equity-inclusion\/files\/2022\/08\/RMilespic-300x170.jpg?w=300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3790\" style=\"width:300px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>\u2014 Dr. Reginald H. Then, when I first came to campus and met with students, faculty, and staff, I was wholeheartedly moved by the kindness and comradery of everyone I met as well as everyone\u2019s openness to transformative change. All of these factors make St. Olaf a unique place to do meaningful work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As a new resident of Minnesota, what are you looking forward&nbsp;to trying this year?<\/strong><br \/>I currently reside in St. Paul where I enjoy the easy access to lakes as well as the variety of cafes and cuisines in the area. Furthermore, I am waiting to see how adventurous I become in the winter by taking up outdoor activities like ice fishing or snowboarding. But in any case, I am open to expanding my winter hobbies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>What is your definition of an inclusive community?<\/b><br \/>I think inclusion and transformative access for traditionally marginalized communities and people is central to the work I teach and how I teach, but I am also troubled by how the term is often used. I miss this experience and truly believe in the power of meaningful&nbsp;pedagogical connections we can foster; St. Olaf seems like the place for that!&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>As a new resident of Minnesota, what are you looking forward&nbsp;to trying this year?<\/strong><br \/>Visiting many lakes. Just moved from beautiful mountainous Colorado so I feel drawn to the water and humidity, truly! Also, looking forward to visiting many bookstores, and open mics, and performing my work at them too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your definition of an inclusive community?<\/strong><br \/>In an inclusive community, all beings (human and other-than-human) who are present are accepted and respected as they are and become and are given the opportunity to share their story, to make repair, and to engage in healing practices towards collective liberation. It begins with curiosity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is your personal \u2018tagline\u2019?<\/strong><br \/>Recovecos (Spanish for nooks, twists, and turns): making meaning together at the moment of encounter towards liberation from oppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>No one knows that I \u2026<\/strong> <br \/>Use them\/them\/theirs (ell<strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">e<\/span><\/strong>&nbsp;in Spanish) pronouns, and that I went to 8 schools in a span of 13 years growing up; lots of moving and adapting. Now you know!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Bias Response<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>St. Olaf College is committed to fostering a welcoming community for all students, faculty, and staff. An informed awareness of the climate on campus is an important part of the college\u2019s efforts to create a supportive academic and residential environment for our community. The college does not tolerate any bias incidents toward its community members. The college expects its students, faculty, and staff to refrain from acts of intolerance directed at other members, including (but not limited to) harassment, hate speech, and discrimination.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/equity-inclusion\/bias-reporting\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/equity-inclusion\/bias-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Click&nbsp;here<\/a> to access our Bias Reporting Form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What is a bias incident?<br \/><\/strong>A bias incident is any behavior or actions directed against a person or property that includes the use of slurs expressing prejudice on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin, age, religion, disability, gender, sexual orientation, or gender identity and expression, but is not a criminal offense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What happens when a bias incident report is submitted?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Interim Vice President for Equity and Inclusion contacts the reporting party to acknowledge that the bias incident report has been received.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The report is sent to the appropriate individuals (see below) to manage&nbsp;the case. Appropriate parties are contacted about the case and the cases are investigated.
