GUIDELINES CAN BE FOUND BELOW (smartphone) OR TO THE RIGHT.<\/strong><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><strong>Infectious diseases<\/strong> are illnesses caused by germs (such as bacteria, viruses, and fungi) that enter the body, multiply, and can cause an infection.\u00a0 The diseases can be spread, directly or indirectly, from one person to another.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emerging<\/strong> means infections that have increased recently or are threatening to increase in the near future and that can cause\u00a0an <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disease_outbreak\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">outbreak<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Epidemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">epidemic<\/a>, or even a <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pandemic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pandemic<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>These incidents of infections could be:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\">completely new (like COVID-19, or MERS, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome).<\/li>\n<li>completely new to an area (like chikungunya in Florida and Texas).<\/li>\n<li>reappearing in an area (like dengue in Florida and Texas), or outbreaks such as pertussis.<\/li>\n<li>caused by bacteria\u00a0that have become resistant to antibiotics, like MRSA (methicillin-resistant\u00a0<em>Staphylococcus aureus<\/em>),\u00a0<em>C. difficile<\/em>, or drug-resistant TB.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>During any emerging infectious disease incident the College will prioritize your health and safety while delivering the best possible St. Olaf experience through all the ups and downs, and we remain ready to adapt and respond if conditions longer requires COVID-19 vaccinations or boosters for students, faculty, staff, volunteers, independent contractors, and staffing agency employees.<\/p>\n<p>However, the College <strong>strongly recommends<\/strong> that all members of our campus community remain up-to-date with COVID vaccines, per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/covid\/vaccines\/stay-up-to-date.html?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/vaccines\/stay-up-to-date.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CDC guidance<\/a>,\u00a0because of the benefits of the COVID-19 vaccine:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Healthy individuals who are vaccinated are unlikely to develop serious health complications if infected.<\/li>\n<li>Unvaccinated individuals are more likely to spend more days in isolation because it may take longer for symptoms to improve.<\/li>\n<li>Vaccinated individuals are more likely to return to in-person campus activities sooner (and vaccinated students may have enough \u201cenergy\u201d to better keep up with classwork when in isolation), which results in less severe disruptions to campus activities.<\/li>\n<li>Vaccinated individuals have a shorter duration of viable viral shedding and a lower rate of secondary transmission than partially vaccinated or unvaccinated individuals; this can result in a lower transmission rate across campus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Accessing Your COVID-19 (and Flu) Vaccination Records<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>For any vaccination
