{"id":3299,"date":"2024-11-26T15:57:52","date_gmt":"2024-11-26T21:57:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/covid-19\/?page_id=3299"},"modified":"2025-08-21T13:11:24","modified_gmt":"2025-08-21T18:11:24","slug":"pertussis-whooping-cough","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/covid-19\/pertussis-whooping-cough\/","title":{"rendered":"Pertussis (Whooping Cough)"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection>\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\t\t\t<div\n\t\t\tclass=\"is-style-default site-section site-panel__accordion panel panel-accordion site-section__bg--normal\"\n\t\t\tdata-depth=\"\"\n\t\t\tdata-js-panel=\"accordion\"\n\t\t>\n\t\n\t\t\t<div class=\"is-style-default site-section__inner l-wrapper \">\n\t\n\t\n\t\t\t\t\t<header class=\"is-style-default site-section__header\">\n\n\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"is-style-default site-section__title h3\" id=\"if-pertussis-is-confirmed-on-campus\" data-name=\"title\" data-livetext data-depth=\"0\" data-index=\"0\">If Pertussis is Confirmed on Campus<\/h2>\n\n\t\t\t<\/header>\n\t\t\n\t\n\t\n\t<div class=\"is-style-default site-grid site-grid__wrapper\">\n\n\t\t<div class=\"is-style-default site-grid__col\">\n\t\t\t\n<figure class=\"is-style-default c-caption\">\n\n\t\n\n\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"is-style-default t-content\" data-name=\"content\" data-index=\"0\" data-autop=\"true\" data-livetext>\n\t\t\t<p><strong>Confirmed Case:\u00a0 <\/strong>Anyone who is confirmed to have pertussis is required to isolate (<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/covid-19\/pertussis-isolation-protocols\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">follow these instructions<\/a>) and complete 5 days of antibiotics.<\/p>\n<p><strong>If You Have Been Exposed:\u00a0 <\/strong>As per MDH guidance, timely response to a confirmed case of whooping cough is also necessary for two main groups of exposed people:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>You are a <strong>household contact<\/strong> of a confirmed case (i.e., you are a roommate, podmate, live in the same off-campus apartment\/house, or were an overnight guest), or<\/li>\n<li>You are a <strong>choir member<\/strong> who was <strong>within 6 feet of<\/strong> a confirmed case during a rehearsal or performance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>If you meet the above exposure criteria then you will be contacted by the MDH or the College and told to follow these instructions<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If You Have Symptoms<\/strong> (one of three options):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Option 1:\u00a0<\/strong> <a style=\"background-color: #ffffff;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/covid-19\/pertussis-isolation-protocols\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Isolate<\/a> for 5 days while completing a treatment of antibiotics.\u00a0 Students will be instructed to go to <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/health\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Health Services<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northfieldhospital.org\/urgent-care-northfield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Urgent Care<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/timelycare\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Timely Care<\/a>, or another medical provider to receive a prescription for the antibiotics; Whooping is less common in infants, adults, and people who have received pertussis vaccine.<\/li>\n<li>Vomiting during or after a coughing spell.<\/li>\n<li>The person&#8217;s face or lips may look blue from lack of oxygen.<\/li>\n<li>The cough is often worse at night.<\/li>\n<li>Between coughing spells, the person seems well, but the illness is exhausting over time.<\/li>\n<li>Coughing episodes gradually become less frequent, but may continue for several weeks or months until the lungs heal.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/article>\n\n\t\t\t\n            <article  class=\"is-style-default accordion__row site-panel__accordion-item \" role=\"tab\" aria-selected=\"false\" id=\"accordion-69e6d799ab4e4-header-2\" aria-controls=\"accordion-69e6d799ab4e4-content-2\">\n        \t\t<button\n\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"is-style-default accordion__header site-panel__accordion-title clearfix\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"2\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"title\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n        \t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <span class=\"is-style-default accordion__header-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tHow is pertussis spread?                >\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <div class=\"is-style-default accordion__content-inner context-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The bacteria are found in fluids from the mouth and nose of someone with pertussis, and are spread when fluid containing the bacteria gets into your nose, mouth, or eye.\u00a0 This can happen when a person with pertussis coughs or sneezes on you, or by touching the fluid and then touching your eyes, nose, or mouth.<\/p>\n<p>In general, a person is at greater risk of getting pertussis if they are within three feet of someone with pertussis for at least 10 hours a week.\u00a0 This is considered close contact.<\/p>\n<p>The period between exposure to the bacteria and onset of illness is usually 7 to 10 days but may be as long as 21 days.<\/p>\n early in the illness.<\/p>\n<p>People who have pertussis can spread the disease during the first three weeks they are coughing.\u00a0 Note: The cough will generally last longer than three weeks until the lungs are healed.<\/p>\n<p>People who have pertussis but have completed five days of antibiotics can no longer spread the disease.<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n pertussis but have completed the five-day treatment of antibiotics can no longer spread the disease.<\/li>\n<li>The five-day treatment of antibiotics will lessen the symptoms if given during the early stages of illness (when antibiotics are started later in the illness, the damage from pertussis is already done and the cough will last until the lungs heal).\u00a0 Pertussis bacteria die off naturally after three weeks of coughing.\u00a0 If antibiotics are not started within that time, they are no longer recommended.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For individuals who are close contacts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The five-day treatment of antibiotics will prevent infection or lessen the symptoms.<\/li>\n<li>After the five-day treatment of antibiotics a person can not infect People who have completed some or all of the recommended vaccinations for pertussis may still get pertussis disease but will generally have a milder illness.<\/p>\n<p>There are two pertussis vaccines: DTaP and Tdap.\u00a0 Both vaccines are given in combination with tetanus and diphtheria.\u00a0 Your age determines which vaccine you should receive and how many doses you need.\u00a0 Talk to your health care provider to find out more.<\/p>\n<p>Pregnant women should get Tdap during the third trimester of\u00a0<strong>each\u00a0<\/strong>pregnancy.\u00a0 If Tdap wasn&#8217;t given during pregnancy, the new mother should get Tdap right after delivery.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Timing of Tdap:<\/strong> If you haven&#8217;t received Tdap yet, you should get it even if you recently received Td vaccine.\u00a0 Ask your health care provider for Tdap at your next visit.<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/article>\n\n\t\t\t\n            <article able.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Self-isolate<\/strong>\u00a0in your room if you can not return home.\u00a0 The College is not maintaining isolation rooms.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Questions about student living
