One out of five unvaccinated people who get measles is hospitalized. Measles causes death in 1-3 out of 1,000 unvaccinated cases. Measles during pregnancy increases the risk of premature labor, miscarriage, and low birth weight infants. Measles can be especially severe in persons whose immune systems are weak.\u00a0 After being eradicated in the United States for many years, measles cases have begun increasing around the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>If You Have Been Exposed to Measles But Have Not Been Vaccinated:\u00a0 <\/strong>As per MDH guidance, <b>you will need to be excluded from campus life and quarantine for 21 days.\u00a0 <\/b>Both St. Olaf and Carleton colleges are following these guidelines.<\/p>\n<p><b>Vaccinated adults who are exposed to measles do not need to quarantine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and can continue campus life as usual unless symptoms appear; When is a person contagious?\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n                <\/button>\n                <div\n\t\t\t\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-header-1\"\n\t\t\t\t\t class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content site-panel__accordion-content context-content t-content \"\t\t\t\t\tid=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-content-1\"\n\t\t\t\t\trole=\"tabpanel\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"1\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-autop=\"true\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"accordion_content\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n                >\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <div class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content-inner context-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Symptoms <\/strong><span lang=\"EN-US\"> begin to appear <\/span><a class=\"is-full-width is-style-default ext\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/signs-symptoms\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-extlink=\"\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">7 to 21 days after exposure<\/span><\/a><span lang=\"EN-US\"> and generally follow this timeline:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>7\u201314 days after initial infection:<\/strong> The earliest symptoms appear, including <strong>fever<\/strong> and the three Cs\u2014<strong>cough<\/strong>, coryza (<strong>runny nose<\/strong>), and conjunctivitis (<strong>red eyes<\/strong>).<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN\"><strong>2\u20133 days after symptoms begin:<\/strong> <strong>Koplik spots<\/strong>, small white bumps with a red halo, may appear on the inner side of the mouth before the onset of rash.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span lang=\"EN-US\"><strong>3\u20135 days after symptoms begin:<\/strong> The characteristic measles <strong>rash<\/strong>, flat red spots originating near the hairline, emerges. Two doses are 97% effective against measles.<\/p>\n<p><b>The MMR vaccine does not guarantee absolute immunity.<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an important point when considering our highly residential campus.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During this current 2025-26 measles outbreak in the U.S., <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/data-research\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">about 5% of the infected individuals had been previously vaccinated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (the remaining 95% were unvaccinated).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/article>\n\n\t\t\t\n            <article  class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__row site-panel__accordion-item \" role=\"tab\" aria-selected=\"false\" id=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-header-3\" aria-controls=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-content-3\">\n        \t\t<button\n\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__header site-panel__accordion-title clearfix\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"3\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"title\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n        \t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <span class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__header-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat qualifies as being exposed to measles?\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n                <\/button>\n                <div\n\t\t\t\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-header-3\"\n\t\t\t\t\t class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content site-panel__accordion-content context-content t-content \"\t\t\t\t\tid=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-content-3\"\n\t\t\t\t\trole=\"tabpanel\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"3\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-autop=\"true\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"accordion_content\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n                >\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <div class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content-inner context-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>You are considered exposed to measles if either of the following is true:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>You were in a shared air space with a contagious individual at the same time.<\/li>\n<li>You were in a shared air space vacated by a contagious individual within the prior 2 hours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It does not matter how long you were in the space.\u00a0 Measles is so highly contagious that you have now been exposed (unless you were wearing a respirator that is at least as protective as a fit-tested, NIOSH-certified disposable N95 filtering facepiece respirator).<\/p>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/article>\n\n\t\t\t\n            <article  class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__row site-panel__accordion-item \" role=\"tab\" aria-selected=\"false\" id=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-header-4\" aria-controls=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-content-4\">\n        \t\t<button\n\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__header site-panel__accordion-title clearfix\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"4\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"title\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n        \t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <span class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__header-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIf you are are exposed to measles but have not been vaccinated, you MUST quarantine immediately\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n                <\/button>\n                <div\n\t\t\t\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-header-4\"\n\t\t\t\t\t class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content site-panel__accordion-content context-content t-content \"\t\t\t\t\tid=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-content-4\"\n\t\t\t\t\trole=\"tabpanel\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"4\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-autop=\"true\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"accordion_content\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n                >\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <div class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content-inner context-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Students:<\/strong> Inform the Dean of Students (507-786-3615) and Health Services (507-786-30630) immediately.\u00a0 They will instruct you regarding campus quarantine requirements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"eb57b156c9f3a147b1360291d30d1c838\">Call your doctor or clinic right away. They will let you know if you need to come in for a visit and provide instructions on how to enter the clinic (wear a well-fitting mask, etc.).\u00a0 If someone drives you to the clinic then (1) roll down the car windows, (2) have the passenger\/patient sit in the back seat opposite of the driver&#8217;s side, (3) have both the driver and passenger\/patient wear well-fitting masks, and (4) ensure that the driver is vaccinated against the measles.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"eb57b156c9f3a147b1360291d30d1c838\">If you have not been vaccinated, getting an MMR shot within three days of being exposed <strong>may<\/strong> prevent you from getting measles.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e2103d5c465380b6218126a998ee69a04\">If you get a shot of immune globulin (a blood product with antibodies to the measles virus) within six days of being exposed to measles, it <strong>may<\/strong> prevent or lessen the severity of measles.<\/li>\n<li data-list-item-id=\"e2103d5c465380b6218126a998ee69a04\"><strong>You must quarantine.<\/strong>\u00a0 You can not be in public places on campus.\u00a0 If feasible, you should return home to quarantine.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n                    <\/div>\n                <\/div>\n            <\/article>\n\n\t\t\t\n            <article  class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__row site-panel__accordion-item \" role=\"tab\" aria-selected=\"false\" id=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-header-5\" aria-controls=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-content-5\">\n        \t\t<button\n\t\t\t\t\taria-expanded=\"false\"\n\t\t\t\t\tclass=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__header site-panel__accordion-title clearfix\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"5\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"title\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n        \t\t>\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <span class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__header-inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\tIf you become infected\t\t\t\t\t<\/span>\n                <\/button>\n                <div\n\t\t\t\t\taria-labelledby=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-header-5\"\n\t\t\t\t\t class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content site-panel__accordion-content context-content t-content \"\t\t\t\t\tid=\"accordion-6ae324212762e-content-5\"\n\t\t\t\t\trole=\"tabpanel\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-depth=\"0\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-index=\"5\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-autop=\"true\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-name=\"accordion_content\"\n\t\t\t\t\tdata-livetext\n                >\n\t\t\t\t\t                    <div class=\"is-full-width is-style-default accordion__content-inner context-content\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>There is no specific treatment for measles. People with measles must isolate during their contagious period and need bed rest, fluids, and control of fever. This is because measles can continue to affect the body&#8217;s immune system after the infection has gone away.<\/p>\n<p>The measles virus can damage immune cells that help the body protect against viruses and bacteria it has encountered before. This effect is sometimes referred to as immune amnesia because the immune system temporarily forgets how to respond to other germs.
