There are substantial changes in disability law between K-12 and Higher Education, which accommodations are determined reasonable, and how they are implemented. Read and Write provides speech-to-text, text-to-speech, mp3 creation, and many more features<\/li>\n<li><strong>Bookshare\u00ae <\/strong>\u2014 an ebook library that makes reading easier.\u00a0<span class=\"normaltextrun\">Students can access a huge collection of ebooks and <i>read their way\u00a0<\/i>with the most customizable ebooks\u00a0<\/span>for people with reading barriers<span class=\"normaltextrun\">.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bookshare.org\/cms\/bookshare-me\">See how Bookshare ebooks work<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>Braille<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Required readings, tests, and quizzes can be embossed in-house in most cases<\/li>\n<li><strong>Large print<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 Required readings, tests, and quizzes can be made available in large print<\/li>\n<li><strong>Converting hardcover to PDF <\/strong>\u2014 Sometimes you just need a lighter load! Carrying just your computer and PDFs (rather than a backpack of heavy textbooks) can help with mobility and balance disabilities, and more. As long as you have purchased or rented the book, we can scan it to PDF for you under the <a href=\"http:\/\/The Chafee Amendment: 17 U.S.C. 121 &amp; 121A\">Chafee Amendment<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>How can I prepare\u00a0before\u00a0each semester?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be ahead of the game! As soon as the book lists are posted:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Buy your books and deliver them (or have them mailed directly) to Disability and Access (DAC), Tomson Hall, suite 153 (c\/o Laura Knobel-Piehl)<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Keep your original email or paper receipts, and bring them into DAC with your books<\/p>\n<p>DAC will look through your request form to see if alternate texts are available before cutting the binding and scanning the book. Cutting the binding will be the last resort. Many St. Olaf\u00a0instructors create student assessments that are flexible and rarely require accommodations. Some assessments, however, still\u00a0present barriers. You should always have the opportunity to demonstrate what you\u2019ve learned without the design of the test being a barrier. That will be accomplished differently in different situations:<\/p>\n<h6 class=\" revealedContent\">ACCESSIBLE TESTS IN THE CLASSROOM<\/h6>\n<p class=\" revealedContent\">Increasingly, course instructors are designing tests that reduce the need for accommodations or are making arrangements for accommodations themselves. Some examples are:<\/p>\n<ul class=\" revealedContent\">\n<li>Designing tests for 30 minutes but allowing students 50 minutes to complete them.<\/li>\n<li>Giving tests online and using software to increase the time allowed for individual students.<\/li>\n<li>Assessing learning with take-home tests, papers, or projects.<\/li>\n<li>Arranging quiet space in a department or office for student testing.<\/li>\n<li>Providing technology, like a computer, for taking tests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\" revealedContent\">As a result of these instructional changes, you may find that accommodations you\u2019ve used in the past aren\u2019t necessary.<\/p>\n<p class=\" revealedContent\">Occasionally, it will still be necessary to obtain an Accommodation Letter allowing for an extended time to complete the exam. Or anywhere else for that matter? Who else at the college knows about my disability?<\/p>\n<p>Your Access Specialists are committed to ensuring that all information and communication pertaining to a student\u2019s disability is maintained as confidential as required or permitted by law. The following guidelines about the treatment of such information have been adopted by Disability and Access. These guidelines incorporate relevant state and federal regulations.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No one will have immediate access to student files in Disability and Access\u00a0<strong>except the appropriate staff of Disability and Access<\/strong>. Any information regarding a disability is considered confidential and will be shared only with others within the college who have a legitimate educational need to know.<\/li>\n<li>Accommodation Letters addressed to the student\u2019s faculty will not inform the instructor of the nature of the disability.
