{"id":70,"date":"2025-07-02T15:00:51","date_gmt":"2025-07-02T20:00:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/dac\/?page_id=70"},"modified":"2025-07-09T11:27:28","modified_gmt":"2025-07-09T16:27:28","slug":"accommodations-faq","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/dac\/accommodations-faq\/","title":{"rendered":"Before Requesting Accommodations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection>\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Please read and keep in mind:<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The purpose of disability accommodations is to prevent discrimination on the basis of disability: Specific barriers that significantly impact the student and impede access to the same opportunities as their peers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A provider&#8217;s letter with a diagnosis and a recommendation of accommodations does not automatically guarantee that that accommodation can\/will be granted. Provider&#8217;s suggestions are not prescriptions, nor are disability accommodations in Higher Ed an <a href=\"https:\/\/definitions.uslegal.com\/e\/entitlement-program\/\">Entitlement Program<\/a>.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The doctor, therapist, or provider is welcome to provide suggestions for accommodations per their medical perspective.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>St. Olaf Access Specialists review any provider recommendations, but will make accommodation decisions based upon the interactive process with the student; and based on Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, the ADA and its amendments, and the Fair Housing Act as they apply to higher education institutions; and in accordance with their institutional knowledge of opportunities provided to all via St. Olaf\u2019s curriculum, programs, and housing.\u00a0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Accommodations are not determined to ensure <strong>success<\/strong> (as is the law for K-12 institutions). Higher Education disability laws ensure <strong><em>equal access<\/em><\/strong> to the same curriculum\/programs\/facilities as all other students. The College wants <em>all<\/em> students to succeed, but at the Higher Education level, success is up to the student.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reasonable accommodations, by their nature, are designed to <strong>increase inclusion<\/strong> for a student with a disability so that they have access to the same opportunities as their peers.
