Kiara Jorgenson – Assistant Professor of Religion & Environmental Studies<\/h2>\n\n

In ENVST 281 we plumb the depths of the Biophilia Hypothesis and pay particular attention to its implications for the conceptualization of human development. In our \u2018Children and Nature\u2019 unit we explore E.O. Wilson\/ Stephen Kellert\u2019s related theory of \u2018prepared\/counterprepared learning,\u2019 by looking closely at how affiliation with nature is depicted in children\u2019s literature. Using Kellert\u2019s overview in “Birthright: People and Nature in the Modern World” the project explores how story and art influence childhood attraction to and affection for nature as well as aversion toward and exploitation of nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
