There are a number of publicly available sources of market and related data online. Below is a sampling of some of those sources. For help finding datasets that are not available on the links listed, check with an economics professor or Research & Instruction\/Data Services Librarian Kate Strain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Sources of Economic and Business Data<\/h3>\n

Federal Reserve Board of Governors
\n<\/a>This is the source for Fed statistical releases<\/a>, Open Market Committee news, the Beige Book and more.<\/p>\n

Federal Reserve Banks
\n<\/a>Some of the best sites are maintained by our local Fed (Minneapolis)<\/a>, New York<\/a>, Boston<\/a>, St. Louis<\/a>, and Chicago<\/a>. These sites will also provide links to other regional Feds.<\/p>\n

Federal Departments, Bureaus, Commissions, etc.<\/h3>\n

Data and reports can be found directly at sites maintained by the Department of Commerce<\/a>, Department of Justice – Antitrust Division<\/a>, Department of Labor<\/a>, Department of the Treasury<\/a>, Bureau of the Census<\/a>, Federal Trade Commission<\/a>, Securities and Exchange Commission<\/a>, and Council of Economic Advisors<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> \u2013 for information on inflation, unemployment, earnings, and productivity.<\/p>\n

The Bureau of Economic Analysis<\/a> \u2013 for information on national income, GDP, international and regional economic accounts.<\/p>\n

Legislative Information<\/h3>\n

U.S. Congress<\/a> \u2013 Information on Congress, the Congressional Record (searchable), and a host of other legislative links are available.<\/p>\n

Minnesota State Legislature<\/a> and State Government (NorthStar)<\/a> \u2013 The state legislature maintains its own site<\/a> with information on the House and Senate, Minnesota statutes, and links to other legislative sites. NorthStar<\/a> is the state government WWW service with links to state agencies and departments.<\/p>\n

Policy Institutes (“Think Tanks”)<\/h3>\n

Here are some starting points: The Brookings Institution<\/a>, The Economic Policy Institute<\/a>, NRDC<\/a>, The Cato Institute<\/a>, and the American Enterprise Institute<\/a> and others produce both data and reports on relevant economic and political issues.<\/p>\n

News and Research<\/h3>\n

National News Sources<\/h4>\n

For news of today, try The New York Times<\/a> (requires free registration), The Washington Post<\/a>, and USA Today<\/a>. Both the Times and Post have excellent search facilities for finding current and past articles.<\/p>\n

State News<\/h4>\n

\u00a0The Minnesota Star Tribune<\/a> and Saint Paul Pioneer Press<\/a> maintain sites on the Web. The Star Tribune provides better access for non-subscribers. Also check WCCO’s site for state news<\/a>.<\/p>\n
