{"id":84,"date":"2013-01-15T23:39:31","date_gmt":"2013-01-15T23:39:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/results\/"},"modified":"2026-05-31T07:53:04","modified_gmt":"2026-05-31T12:53:04","slug":"results","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/results\/","title":{"rendered":"Minnesota Teacher Licensure"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Important Announcement Regarding Testing for Teacher Licensure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Minnesota State Legislature passed a bill that included a major change to teacher licensure requirements. As of August 1, 2023, the Minnesota Teacher Licensing Exams (MTLE) Content, Pedagogy, and Basic Skills Exams will no longer be required for earning a Minnesota professional teaching license for those who successfully completed a PELSB-approved licensure program, including student teaching or practicum; St. Olaf College falls into this category. More information about testing requirements can be found on <a href=\"https:\/\/mn.gov\/pelsb\/current-educators\/testing\/\"><strong>the PELSB website<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tiered Licensure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Minnesota employs a&nbsp;<strong>Tiered Licensure<\/strong>&nbsp;(effective July 1, 2018). This new system provides for four tiers of licenses, please see this&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/mn.gov\/pelsb\/assets\/Infographic%20Update%20-%2007.2024_tcm1113-638554.pdf\"><strong>infographic provided by Education Minnesota<\/strong><\/a>. Completers of St. Olaf&#8217;s Teacher Education program will be eligible for a Tier 3 license if they complete St. Olaf&#8217;s Teacher Education program, including successful student teaching and all other requirements (see below)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This Tier 3 license is valid for three years and can be renewed indefinitely. Once a candidate has taught in Minnesota for three years, they are eligible to move to Tier 4, the highest possible tier.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommendations for Initial Licensure (1 license) &#8212; State Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete a minimum of 100 field experience hours prior to student teaching that includes 60 hours aligned to the scope and content of the license; have experiences with students who differ in race, ethnicity, home language, and socioeconomic status; have experiences with students with a range of exceptionalities; complete at least 12 full-time weeks of face-to-face student teaching that is aligned to the scope and content of the license; complete Board-Adopted Performance Assessment (CPAST)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommendations for Initial Licensure (2 licenses) &#8212; State Requirements<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Complete a minimum of 100 field experience hours prior to student teaching that include at least 30 hours aligned to the scope and content of EACH license; have experiences with students who differ in race, ethnicity, home language, and socioeconomic status; have experiences with students with a range of exceptionalities; complete at least 14 full-time weeks of face-to-face student teaching that is aligned to the scope and content of the license; complete Board-Adopted Performance Assessment (CPAST)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Recommendations for Initial Licensure &#8212; St. Olaf Requirements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the state requirements, St. Olaf requires teacher candidates to:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Complete Candidate Portfolio and Presentation prior to student teaching<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete all required content area courses (see <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/licenses\/\">advising sheets<\/a>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete all required Education courses and field experiences and meet specified Minnesota Standards of Effective Practice (SEP)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Successfully complete ED 389: Student Teaching \u2013 <strong>13-14 weeks<\/strong>, face-to-face, full-time as measured by supervisor evaluations and verified time logs, and earn at least a \u201cB\u201d (Note that <strong>students seeking two licences will student teach twice: 14 weeks at their first placement and 10 weeks at their second<\/strong>)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete ED 381: Student Teaching Seminar, meet all SEP standards associated with the course, and earn at least a \u201cB\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Meet all SEP standards associated with the CPAST or remediate criteria with standards only met at the \u201cEmerging\u201d level<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Successfully complete Subject Matter Portfolio (assigned during student teaching)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Satisfy disposition criteria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Submit the final Student Teaching Evaluation (self-assessments, TPP evaluation and placement report), including the Transition to Teaching Common Metrics\u2019 survey.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participate in an exit interview with the Director of Field Experiences and Licensure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Complete all licensure forms, including fingerprints, and submit fee<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Array<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":7,"featured_media":0,"parent":0,"menu_order":0,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","template":"","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"footnotes":""},"class_list":["post-84","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry"],"acf":[],"jetpack_sharing_enabled":true,"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/84","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/page"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/7"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=84"}],"version-history":[{"count":33,"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/84\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":4947,"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/pages\/84\/revisions\/4947"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/education\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=84"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
