Sarah E. Ferguson was a sophomore at St. Olaf College when she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a very aggressive form of bone cancer. Sarah faced this challenge as she had faced life in general: with optimism and courage. Unfortunately, she succumbed to the disease six months later.
Sarah had her life planned out. She wanted to enter the publishing world in some way. She would have done well. She was an excellent writer and had an eye for editing. She viewed the world with open eyes and without prejudice. One of Sarah’s final requests was that we find a way to help others achieve her goal.
We are therefore establishing this award to assist St. Olaf College students in advancing their education and/or job experience towards the goal of a successful career in publishing. The award may be used to assist financing higher education, seminars, internships, or even entry level jobs in the field. Our hope is that the selectee will carry on Sarah’s legacy of viewing the world with “open eyes.”
