{"id":192,"date":"2013-10-17T12:22:36","date_gmt":"2013-10-17T17:22:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/environmental-studies\/?page_id=192"},"modified":"2025-05-21T15:50:04","modified_gmt":"2025-05-21T20:50:04","slug":"international-and-off-campus-programs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/environmental-studies\/international-and-off-campus-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Environmental Studies Study Abroad\/Away"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/smithcenter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith Center for Global Engagement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> provides opportunities to expand the liberal arts education learning globally and to local communities within the U.S.\u00a0 Programs are offered during January Term, fall semester, spring semester, and during a full academic year.\u00a0 There is an application process for each of these programs and courses.\u00a0 Semester and year-long programs tend to remain the same from year to year with some minor changes.\u00a0 January Term programs can differ based on faculty availability, budgets, and programming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith Center programs can be viewed on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">application database<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 Single searches and more advanced searches can be done to find a program within a student&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/smithcenter\/by-area-of-interest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">area of study and interest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 For more information attend a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">101 Session: Intro to Study Abroad\/Away<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or program info session (see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/smithcenter\/smith-center-events\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith Center Events<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for more details), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/smithcenter\/make-an-appointment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meet with a Peer Advisor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and visit the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/smithcenter\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smith Center webpage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for program costs, application instructions, and additional information.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students who wish to count study abroad\/away courses towards the Environmental Studies major or concentration should seek approval from the department chair, <a href=\"mailto:jorgen1@stolaf.edu\">Dr. Kiara Jorgenson<\/a>, before beginning their programs. Some restrictions apply. These <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/spreadsheets\/d\/1K8aL0thWGIghB50BeOytaz5Qp14NtptOXSKinO7nA2E\/edit?gid=0#gid=0\">study abroad\/away courses<\/a> offered by other institutions have already been approved for elective credit in the Environmental Studies major.<\/p>\n<h2>Popular Semester-Long Programs for Environmental Studies Majors<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><a title=\"Environmental Science in Australia\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/environmental-studies\/environmental-science-in-australia-2\/\">Environmental Science in Australia &amp; New Zealand <\/a>(program paused for 2026)<a title=\"Environmental Science in Australia\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/environmental-studies\/environmental-science-in-australia-2\/\"><br \/>\n<\/a><\/strong>Program Director:\u00a0<a href=\"mailto:jackson@stolaf.edu\">Dr. Paul Jackson<\/a>, Chemistry &amp; Environmental Studies<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10037\"><strong>DIS Copenhagen<\/strong><\/a><strong> or <a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10236\">DIS Stockholm<\/a><\/strong> &#8211; Students choose from a core course that consists of two study tours (one regional and one longer tour to a European destination). Students also choose from a wide array of elective courses.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10097\"><strong>Oregon Extension in Ashland, Oregon<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; Every fall semester, this community welcomes a four-month program of learning and study. The study is accomplished in intensive small-group and individual tutorial sessions, tailored to the students&#8217; interests and needs.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/stolaf.studioabroad.com\/index.cfm?FuseAction=Programs.ViewProgram&amp;Program_ID=10121\"><strong>University of Otago in New Zealand<\/strong> <\/a>&#8211; Students choose from courses in many discipline areas.
