The Environmental Protection Agency set up a program in which colleges and universities could do a self-audit of their efforts to comply with the applicable federal regulatory programs that apply to the environment, with no punitive actions. There was a catch of course, but a good one. The institutions had to agree up front to correct any deficiencies within strictly defined parameters.
In Minnesota the program is administered by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, for the EPA. St. Olaf submitted its self-audit in 2011, and was named a Green Star Facility by the MPCA.
