{"id":239,"date":"2013-12-10T14:12:28","date_gmt":"2013-12-10T20:12:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/facultyhandbook\/?page_id=239"},"modified":"2026-08-19T16:17:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T21:17:26","slug":"voluntary-retirement-plan-for-st-olaf-faculty","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/facultyhandbook\/voluntary-retirement-plan-for-st-olaf-faculty\/","title":{"rendered":"Voluntary Retirement Plan for St. Olaf Faculty"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>[Faculty Handbook Category #4]<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Goal<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To provide a single, transparent plan for an orderly transition as faculty retire and provide faculty a pathway for the transition to retirement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Eligibility<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The retirement plan with program options listed below is available to tenured faculty ages 62-67, with a minimum of 15 years of employment at St. Olaf who provide a minimum of two year\u2019s notice prior to retirement and who meet the requirements for plan participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Requirements for Program Participation<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A faculty member must sign an Agreement which specifies a firm date for retirement not less than two years from the date of the Agreement, elect one of the options listed below for their transition period, and agree to surrender tenure rights, effective at the scheduled date of retirement. Faculty will become participants in the plan and eligible for the benefits only after signing this Agreement. Once the faculty member has signed the Agreement, surrender of tenure rights on the scheduled date of retirement cannot be changed or altered.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Faculty who participate in this plan will be expected to continue fulfilling responsibilities to the department and college, including serving as academic advisors, during the time they are participants.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Program Options:<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Full retirement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the full retirement option, faculty agree to teach full-time until their retirement date. Faculty members will receive an increase in compensation equal to 20% of their base (full-time) salary during the final year of employment. This additional compensation will be paid over the course of the year in accordance with normal payroll practices and will be contingent on the faculty member\u2019s performance of service for St. Olaf throughout the final year of employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\">Phased retirement<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the phased retirement plan, faculty elect to perform a schedule of part-time teaching (not less than .5 FTE) for a period of two years before retiring fully. Faculty members will receive an increase in compensation equal to 10% of their base (full-time) salary during each of their final two years of employment. This additional compensation will be paid over the course of the year in accordance with normal payroll practices and will be contingent on the faculty member\u2019s performance of service for St. Olaf throughout the final year of employment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Additional Retirement Benefits Available<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Faculty members will retain all medical benefits provided by the College at their original FTE level during their participation in this plan. Benefits which are related to salary, such as contributions to the Matched Retirement Plan, life insurance and long-term disability, are based on actual salary paid.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Participation in the retiree health plan if full retirement age is prior to age 65<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>TIAA-CREF counseling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Discretion of College<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The College reserves the right to alter or deny a request under this plan if 1) the Provost determines that the participation of a faculty member would seriously disrupt an academic department or college program, or 2) the Provost has received more applications for participation in this program than can be approved in light of financial or operational requirements; 3) the College determines that granting the request would not be in the best overall interest of the College based on academic, operational, financial or other considerations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-medium-font-size\"><strong>Effective Date<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The College plans to make this plan effective May 1, 2023, and to review the plan at regular intervals. The College reserves the right to change or discontinue the program if institutional needs are not being met.
