During the semester, students can take an optional <strong>foreign language component<\/strong> attached to a <strong>core course.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Core course: <\/strong>A traditional St. Olaf course highlighting a particular subject.<\/p>\n<p>FLAC currently offers courses in the following disciplines:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/art\/\">Art<\/a>\u00a0\/\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/asian-studies\/\">Asian Studies<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/hispanic-studies\/\">Latin American Studies<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/history\/\">History &amp; Asian Studies\/History<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/music\/\">Music<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/poli-sci\/\">Political Science<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/religion\/\">Religion<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/sociology\/\">Sociology\/Anthropology<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Foreign Language Component (FLC)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a foreign language component, students meet once a week for one hour with a language professor to discuss core course materials in the <i>target language.<\/i> In some components, students read materials in the target language and discuss them in English with their professor.\u00a0 The FLC provides an additional .25 credit.<br \/>\nForeign languages offered:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/chinese\/\">Chinese<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/french\/\">French<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/german\/\">German<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/japanese\/\">Japanese<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/classics\/\">Latin<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stolaf.edu\/norwegian\/\">Norwegian<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/russian\/\">Russian<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/spanish\/\">Spanish<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Foreign Language Component Models:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span class=\"Apple-style-span\" style=\"line-height: 12px;\">Paired-Instructor model: A foreign language professor maintains and oversees the foreign language component; the core course professor often attends as a participant.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Single-Instructor model: The professor of the core course is also responsible for the foreign language component.<\/li>\n<li>Readings Enriched model: The professor of the core course leads discussion in English of materials read in foreign languages.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Why participate in FLAC?<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Deepen understanding of a discipline<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Use and improve oral language skills<b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Fulfill GE and\/or major requirements <b><\/b><\/li>\n<li>Prepare for study abroad<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>Eligibility: <\/b>Completion of the foreign language requirement in the target language.<\/p>\n<p><b>Registration: <\/b>Register for both the core course (1.00 credit) AND the foreign language component (.25 credit). Usually, the FLC meeting day and time is unlisted or TBA; this will be arranged at the first meeting of the core course.<\/p>\n<p><b>FLAC Certification: <\/b>After successful completion of two foreign language components, students achieve \u201capplied foreign language competency.&#8221; This achievement is then listed on the student\u2019s official St. Olaf transcript.<\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FLAC (Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum), an interdisciplinary program, allows students to study a foreign language alongside another subject.
