Anti-Aura: Interrogating Authenticity<\/em>

Starting with Walter Benjamin\u2019s concept of aura \u2013\u00a0an object\u2019s connection to space, time, and ritual \u2013\u00a0this exhibition investigates the notion of authenticity in art. By purposely choosing works with questionable authenticity, Anti-Aura: Interrogating Authenticity<\/em> features works that complicate the perceived authority of an original work of art. With works from Flaten Art Museum\u2019s collection attributed to Georgia O\u2019Keeffe, Eug\u00e8ne Delacroix, and Wassily Kandinsky, the exhibition delves into fakes, forgeries, and formulations of cultural identity. The exhibition considers the authentic, or the \u201creal,\u201d which encompasses authorship, style, and use of medium to interrogate the multiplicity of authenticity.<\/p>\n

This is the fourth annual Lasting Legacy<\/em> exhibition, an ongoing series that puts St. Olaf art history majors in contact with objects from Flaten Art Museum\u2019s collection. Special thanks to faculty mentor Christopher Tradowsky, Assistant Professor of Art History, and the class of 2018 co-curators: Joshua Garver, Anna-Marie Heins, Hannah Kruse, Leni Schneider, Elizabeth Steidel, Holly Westwood, Jabri Whirl, and Keyu Yan.<\/p>\n
