The 1862 hanging of 38 Dakota men in Mankato, Minnesota was a government-sanctioned execution, unlike the extra-judicial lynchings that are the focus of Gonzales-Day\u2019s research. Stately\u2019s lecture will ask: what happened to the women, children, and elders who survived the 38 Dakota men hung in Mankato? What was the impact of this history for a matriarchal society?
