{"id":55,"date":"2013-06-13T08:49:09","date_gmt":"2013-06-13T13:49:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/german\/?page_id=55"},"modified":"2026-01-28T09:23:53","modified_gmt":"2026-01-28T15:23:53","slug":"the-german-major","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/german\/the-german-major\/","title":{"rendered":"The German Major"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>The German major curriculum joins advanced language learning with analytical perspectives from literary studies, history, sociology, anthropology, and film and media studies that bring students to a sophisticated and critical understanding of the German-speaking world, present and past.<\/p>\n<h2>Intended Learning Outcomes<\/h2>\n<p><em>Students will demonstrate:<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>linguistic competence<\/strong>, entailing:\n<ol>\n<li>language proficiency in listening, reading, writing and speaking German at the ACTFL Intermediate-High level; and<\/li>\n<li>metalinguistic awareness of language as a system and of the ways in which language organizes thought processes and reflects culture.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>cultural knowledge<\/strong>, entailing the ability to critically interpret specific trends in contemporary German-speaking societies within their broader cultural contexts, considering factors such as national histories, international relations and constructions of power, privilege, and inequality.<\/li>\n<li><strong>textual competence<\/strong>, entailing the ability to comprehend and analyze a wide range of texts, taking account of factors such as genre, audience, purpose, organization, discourse conventions, rhetorical elements, and linguistic features, as well as historical, geographical, cultural, multilingual and intellectual contexts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>disciplinary knowledge<\/strong>, entailing the ability to comprehend and apply one or more of the major theoretical and methodological approaches to studying German-speaking societies, such as critical historiography, cultural studies, literary analysis, and sociolinguistics.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Requirements for the German Major<\/h2>\n<p>A student must complete\u00a0<strong>eight\u00a0<\/strong>courses above German 112:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Two<\/strong> 250-level courses, at least one taught by a St. Olaf instructor;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Two<\/strong> 270-level courses, at least one taught by a St. Olaf instructor;<\/li>\n<li><strong>One<\/strong> 300-level course taken at St. Olaf;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Three<\/strong> additional courses of student\u2019s choosing; can include German 231, German 232, St. Olaf Interim abroad, German university exchange program;<\/li>\n<li>Six courses with minimum grade of C; one course may be taken S\/U<\/li>\n<li>Maximum of two courses from semester of study abroad \/ four courses from year study abroad. Courses taken during <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/german\/semester-abroad\/\">study abroad<\/a> must be in German to count toward the major;<\/li>\n<li>Maximum of one course in English. (Note: a 1\/4-credit German <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/flac\/\">LAC<\/a> section does\u00a0<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> count as a course taken in German, and some English-language courses must be taken with the German LAC to count toward the major or concentration.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/16N-6lMNckIGmjJfUX11qfw3AlPy35LVLIuf5LoBGJsU\/edit?usp=sharing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?hl=en&amp;q=https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/german\/files\/2013\/06\/German-Promo-2017.pdf&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1517079872597000&amp;usg=AFQjCNG9xSTnxUJK_KehBQhLE4-xLqBE2A\">German Major and German Studies Concentration Planning Rubric<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Students need not be German majors to take upper-division (250-level and above) German courses or participate in a <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/german\/semester-abroad\/\">study abroad<\/a> program in a German-speaking country. Courses taken in German may satisfy <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/curriculum-committee\/ole-core-curriculum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ole Core requirements<\/a> as well as requirements for some other majors.<\/p>\n<p>In the spring of their senior year, all German majors take the German <a href=\"https:\/\/www.actfl.org\/assessments\/postsecondary-assessments\/oral-proficiency-interview-computer-opic\">OPIc<\/a> exam. This online exam certifies the taker&#8217;s German oral proficiency level according to standards of the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.actfl.org\/\">ACTFL<\/a>).
