About Health Service

Welcome Oles!

Health Service offers short appointments for  minor conditions.  Health Service is staffed by an advanced practice provider and an administrative assistant.  Referrals  to other local clinics are often given for conditions other than minor illness or injury as the types of services provided by Health Service are limited.  Students can establish care locally for procedures or testing beyond simple labs, management or co-management of chronic or complicated conditions, mental health conditions, or those that require a specialist.  For your convenience, the Health Service website has a list of local providers, including local Express Care and Urgent Care.

Health Service is open Monday – Friday, 9 – 11:30 a.m. and 1 – 4 p.m.  Health Service is closed during student breaks, summer, and occasional days during the school year.  Students are seen by appointment (scheduled through the Student Health Portal).  Students can access local providers by using insurance when Health Service is closed or a provider appointment is not available,  or as needed.  Transportation options are listed on the Student Activities page.  For urgent assistance, students can call Public Safety at 507-786-3066.

Students under the age of 18 will need to have a completed Parental Consent form signed on file before they can be seen and treated at Health Service. The form can be found on the Health Service website under Health forms. Once completed, please mail or fax to Health Service.

As an alternative to being seen in Health Service, students  enrolled in the St Olaf insurance plan can use the Telehealth Line  (as soon as the policy is in effect) to talk with a physician for treatment of certain conditions 24 hrs/day, 7 days/wk without a consultation fee.  The Toll free # is on your SR ID card or in “My account.”  Students not on the school insurance plan are encouraged to call their personal insurance Nurse Hotline. Students experiencing an emergency or urgent health care need can call 911 and/or public safety at 507-786-3666 for transport to the ER.

**Health Service is limited in the services it can provide.  There are times when students may need to access care at local clinics using insurance.

Services provided include:

  • Short telehealth visits with a healthcare provider who can diagnose, treat, and write prescriptions for common illnesses and conditions.
  • Laboratory services: mono tests, strep tests, urinalysis, and pregnancy tests. STI screening and lab send outs stop approximately 2 1/2 weeks prior to the end of the school year and before student breaks. Students needing other labs drawn may take outside provider lab orders to the Northfield Hospital laboratory. To avoid out of network charges, students may need to first establish care with a Northfield Family clinic provider. Students are responsible for checking with insurance before having labs drawn.
  • Reproductive care including contraceptive counseling, oral contraceptives, emergency contraception, and limited sexually transmitted infection screening. Students may bring in prescribed single dose Depo provera shots for administration. Costs for oral contraceptives prescribed and purchased through St Olaf Health Service can be paid with Ole card or student account. STI screening-gonorrhea and chlamydia can be sent out and paid for with an Ole card or insurance can be billed. HIV screening can also be done in Health Service. Other STI screening will be billed to insurance.
  • Immunizations (out of pocket charge, insurance is not billed):  Tdap.   Students should contact Health Service about availability and out of pocket cost.
  • TB skin tests or Quantiferon tests are also available. Students should contact Health Service about availability and cost.
  • Some immunizations and prescriptions for St Olaf January interim study abroad.  Students may access local or home providers or a travel clinic for complete consultations, medications, and vaccinations not provided by Health Service.
  • Equipment available for loan including crutches, canes, slings, heating pads, and educational materials. Students are charged only if equipment is not returned.
  • Transportation-off campus transportation options.
  • Prescription Delivery: Prescriptions from home may be transferred to local pharmacies and some deliver to St. Olaf College for student pick-up. Prescriptions from outside providers are not filled on campus.
  • A Flu immunization clinic is organized by Human Resources using an outside vendor for employees, staff, and students during the fall semester. It is held on campus in Buntrock Commons. Students will receive emails on cost, dates, and times. Flu shots can also be obtained at local clinics and pharmacies.  Call ahead to those locations for questions about availability, cost, use of insurance, and age requirements.

Students can visit or call Health Service @ 507-786-3063 for answers to questions about what services may or may not be provided.
