St. Olaf understands that illness and injury may impact a student’s ability to attend class or to carry out campus related activities. The Dean of Students Office and Health Service advise students that it is the responsibility of the student to notify professors, coaches, and supervisors when missing classes or work. Students should also make arrangements for missed assignments directly with each professor, preferably before missing a class. Conversations between students and faculty/staff should identify how a student can work around an illness or injury to best continue academic efforts and activities. In most cases, Health Service will not provide excuse notes for missed classes/labs, work, clinical, athletic events, or practices. If students need restrictions or clearance notes to participate in athletic activities, students will need to contact the athletic office. When writing e-mails to professors and other staff regarding academic issues, students are encouraged to cc e-mails to their class dean.
