{"id":22,"date":"2012-08-14T15:29:16","date_gmt":"2012-08-14T20:29:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/history\/?page_id=22"},"modified":"2025-03-18T11:35:12","modified_gmt":"2025-03-18T16:35:12","slug":"special-programs","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/history\/special-programs\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Programs"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>The History Department supports several other programs:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The Social Studies Education major (see <a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.stolaf.edu\/academic-programs\/social-studies-education\/\">description<\/a>) is appropriate for those considering a career in secondary (middle or high school) teaching. \u00a0Students may double major in History and Social Studies Education and meet all requirements for the Minnesota secondary (5-12) teaching license in Social Studies. \u00a0History courses required for the license include History 198; 199; either 191 or 195; and a Level-II History area course on Africa, Asia, or Latin America. Additional course work in Economics, Geography, Political Science, Psychology and Sociology\/Anthropology are also required for the Social Studies Education major.<\/li>\n<li>The Foreign Languages Across the Curriculum (FLAC) program (see <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/flac\/\">description<\/a>) offers students opportunities to integrate their foreign-language skills with the study of History. Students in specially-designated History classes can use their Spanish, French, German, Russian, Chinese, or Latin so that nothing is lost to them in the translation!<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>History courses taken in off-campus programs can sometimes be counted toward the major.
