St. Olaf\u2019s history offerings are structured to help students achieve different learning goals at different levels.\u00a0In\u00a0Level-I seminars<\/strong>, students approach history as a way of learning\u00a0through a focused analysis of primary sources in context.\u00a0 In\u00a0Level-II courses<\/strong>, students explore historiography and the constructed nature of history in topical, regional and thematic contexts. \u00a0Level-III seminars<\/strong>\u00a0center research skills and challenge students to formulate their own questions about history, historiography, and historical methods.<\/p>\n

Level-I<\/strong> seminars are open to juniors, sophomores and first-year students only.<\/p>\n

Before entering Level-III courses<\/strong>, students with little or no background in a particular area or period should consult with the instructor. Level-III<\/strong> courses are not open to incoming first year students.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Requirements for the Major<\/h3>\n

History majors are required to take nine courses<\/strong>, including:<\/h5>\n

One Level-II Methods Seminar<\/p>\n

Three Level III Seminars<\/p>\n

Six Additional Courses<\/p>\n

*Three Level-I courses may count toward the major.<\/p>\n

Students must take at least one course in each of three global areas<\/strong>:<\/h5>\n

Category 1 (Africa, Asia, Latin America)<\/p>\n

Category 2 (United States)<\/p>\n

Category 3 (Europe and Russia).<\/p>\n

Typically this area requirement should be fulfilled in Level-I or Level-II courses. Students may count one St. Olaf course taken outside of the History Department toward the History Major, either by application or by successfully completing a course on the department’s pre-approved list.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
