Mission<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>At the Honor Council, we are devoted to upholding the highest standards of impartiality and due process in our investigations. We aim to approach each case holistically in a restorative manner that emphasizes learning from mistakes and personal growth, while affirming the St. Olaf community\u2019s commitment to academic integrity.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>II. Duties of Members<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Members will abide by all duties as outlined in the Honor Council Constitution.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missing more than three weekly meetings in an academic year without prior notification and approval may be considered grounds for removal from the Honor Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any willful or wanton violation of confidentiality may be considered grounds for removal from the Honor Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><strong>III. Duties of Officers<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li>President\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President will organize the Honor Council at the beginning of the Fall and Spring Semesters and provide training to new and returning members of the Honor Council as necessary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President will prepare periodic reports of Honor Council activity and disperse them to the Student Body.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Methods of dispersal may include, but are not limited to, publication in the Olaf Messenger, presentation to the Student Senate, or public postings or pamphlets.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports may include, but will not be limited to, a general tabulation of the number of Honor Council cases, the number of hearings held, and general numbers for responsibility and sanction determinations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reports will neither specifically reveal the outcome of any particular case nor provide data that would reveal the outcome of any particular case, either explicitly or implicitly.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President will be reasonably available to students, faculty, administrators, and other members of the St. Olaf community to represent the Honor Council in any matter of concern.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President will implement periodic education efforts to inform the Faculty and Student Body of the various aspects of the Honor System, including, but not limited to: common misunderstandings, faculty responsibilities, confidentiality considerations, and test etiquette.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President (or their designee) will relay all necessary materials to the appellate authority in the event of an appeal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The President will be responsible for authorizing all interviews with Implicated Students in consideration of the evidence collected during Honor Council investigations.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Vice President\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice President will assist the President in performing administrative and public relations duties.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice President will, in association with the Faculty Advisor, act as liaison between the Honor Council and the Faculty and Staff.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice President will identify, organize, train, and coordinate a group of faculty and staff to act as neutral Honor Code Guides.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Secretary\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretary will maintain copies of the Honor Council Constitution and Bylaws, noting any changes to these documents that may occur.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretary will maintain all written and audio records of hearings and meetings of the Honor Council. This will include the destruction of records when appropriate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretary will be responsible for bringing unsigned examinations and other exam concerns reported by the Faculty to the attention of the Honor Council.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretary will be responsible for maintaining, updating, and ensuring completion of the Honor Council Case Log each year.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretary will assign an Investigator for each case.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Secretary will maintain a collection of form and letter templates for use by others in Honor Council matters, including, but not limited to: investigative reports, summonses, letters, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><strong>IV. <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/honorcouncil\/files\/2025\/03\/Honor-Council-Process-7.pdf\">Honor Council Process<\/a><\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li><em>Discussion Phase<\/em> (prior to formal reporting to the Honor Council)\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For faculty-implicated cases only, faculty members will have the option to privately meet with the Implicated Student prior to officially sending their concern to the Honor Council in order to clarify the veracity of the case and to ensure understanding at a pedagogical level of the perceived wrongdoing.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event that faculty members wish to forego this step, the matter can be sent directly to the Honor Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the matter is not resolved, or if the faculty member wishes to pursue an Honor System violation and\/or grade-bearing sanction for the implication, the case must be submitted to the Honor Council for formal investigation. Examples which would require the case be sent to the Honor Council include, but are not limited to situations where:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the discussion does not clear up the uncertainty surrounding the student\u2019s actions that led to the initial implication<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the student does not attend the discussion, or attends but declines to proceed with the discussion at any point<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the professor wishes for the student to be heard by a council of their peers, regardless of their own opinions about the case<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the professor wishes to pursue an Honor System violation to be considered for the Implicated Student.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the professor wishes to pursue a grade-bearing sanction to be considered for the Implicated Student.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the matter is resolved in accordance with the aforementioned policy, faculty members need only report this action (and outcome determined) to the Honor Council for internal record-keeping purposes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Assignment Phase<\/em> (usually within 48 hours of case receipt)\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty members are mandated to report potential Honor Code violations that occur in their classes using the appropriate form, whether professor- or student-implicated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council Secretary will assign cases to a representative of the Honor Council who will act as the primary Case Investigator for their duration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event that a sufficient number of Honor Council members are unavailable to participate in the investigation or adjudication of an alleged violation of the Honor System due to a conflict of interest, the matter shall be assigned to the Student Life Committee Appeals Board, who shall conduct proceedings in accordance with the Honor Council Process. The Honor Council Faculty Advisor or another appropriate liaison from the Honor Council shall guide in the proper education regarding the Honor Council Process.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Investigation Phase<\/em> (usually within three days of case acceptance)\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Case Investigator will notify the Implicated Student by email that an investigation into the potential Honor Code violation has begun, providing additional resources for support and preparation.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Case Investigator will additionally reach out to the professor of the course and\/or other parties involved other than the Implicated Student to further ascertain the extent and context of the potential implication, as necessary or requested.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A minimum of two members of the Honor Council must be present when meeting in person or virtually with necessary parties.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Case Investigator will compile all information, documentation, and other resources in a standardized case report in consistency with with relevant Honor Council policies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Interview Phase<\/em> (usually within 48 hours of investigation completion)\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Case Investigator will obtain authorization from the Honor Council President for an interview to be conducted, providing the case report for review.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Case Investigator will schedule an interview with the Implicated Student.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interviews will be conducted between the Implicated Student and a three-member Interview Quorum composed of the Case Investigator and two other Honor Council members.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will have the option to attend their interview virtually or in-person.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event the Implicated Student does not attend their interview, in the absence of special circumstances, the quorum will continue with subsequent determinations without their input.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will have an opportunity to respond to all evidence as able to be discussed during the interview.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Testimony will be recorded in two forms: audio\/video recording and summary notes. Notification of these methods will occur at the start of the interview.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will receive a briefing regarding interview procedure and confidentiality prior to any questioning.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will have the opportunity to make an opening statement prior to any questioning; whether an opening statement is delivered will have no role in the outcome of a case.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will be questioned in a manner that avoids leading questions.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Interview Quorum will determine whether additional interviews need to be conducted and will conduct any as necessary.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will have the opportunity to request that the Interview Quorum interview specific individuals associated with the matter; interviews merely for the purpose of character development will not be conducted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If applicable, the Interview Quorum will engage in a conversation with the associated faculty member regarding preferred responsibility and sanction determinations in light of evidence and testimony collected.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After all interviews have been conducted, the Interview Quorum will deliberate on all testimony and evidence, making a preliminary recommendation regarding the responsibility of the Implicated Student and any sanctions, as necessary, on the basis of a simple majority.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will not be notified of any decision until after the confirmation phase ends.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Confirmation Phase<\/em> (usually at the next weekly Honor Council meeting)\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Quorum, headed by the Case Investigator, will bring the results of the interview phase in addition to all case documentation before the entire Honor Council for final confirmation or refutation at a weekly meeting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council at large will vote to confirm or refute the preliminary recommendation by a simple majority. In the event the recommendation is refuted, the Honor Council at large will reconsider responsibility and\/or sanction determinations by a simple majority vote.<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ties during this confirmation vote will result in the overturning of the quorum\u2019s preliminary recommendation.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Implicated Student will be notified of the final decision made by the Honor Council, in addition to supplemental information regarding recordkeeping, appeals, and support resources.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><em>Appeals Phase<\/em>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within five business days after the end of the confirmation phase, either the Implicated Student or the faculty member involved (in faculty-implicated cases only), will have the opportunity to appeal to the Student Life Committee Appeals Board on the following grounds only:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A procedural error (defined as a deviation from the Honor Council Constitution, Bylaws, or adopted Policies) was made that can be proven to have illegitimately affected the responsibility or sanction outcome of the case, or<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New evidence is provided that would change the outcome of the case.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Parties wishing to appeal should contact the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dean of Students<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> including their reason for appealing and Honor Council case number<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, who will then be responsible for liaising between the Honor Council and the Student Life Committee Appeals Board.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon notification of an appeal request in consideration, the Honor Council will grant the Student Life Committee Appeals Board access to the student appellant\u2019s case file and offer any testimony as requested.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Student Life Committee Appeals Board will conduct an investigation into the matter, determining whether an appeal is granted.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the start of the investigation, any voting members of the Student Life Committee Appeals Board shall complete the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/docs.google.com\/document\/d\/1G1C-GG5XxUojNOyXC-KwPiqAL_gG892Fo4WEFwiSw20\/edit?usp=sharing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appeals Briefing Acknowledgement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form and send it to the Honor Council Secretary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the event an appeal is granted, it is the responsibility of the \u00a0Student Life Committee Appeals Board to communicate exactly what information and\/or sanctions should be added or removed from an appellant\u2019s record to the Honor Council Secretary.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If an appeal is denied, the requesting party is prohibited from appealing again and the matter will be considered resolved.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Life Committee Appeals Board<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shall consider appeal requests and their relevant cases in their entirety, including all documentation and testimony collected during the initial investigation and adjudication process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Appeals may only be granted if a simple voting majority of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Life Committee Appeals Board<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> votes to overturn the initial decision of the Honor Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><strong>V. Honor Code Guides<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor Code Guides are trusted members of the college staff, administration, and faculty who are trained to offer students and members of the faculty impartial information on the procedures and activities of the Honor Council and its hearings.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Any party involved in an Honor Council case in any role will receive a copy of the current list of Honor Code Guides.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor Code Guides will not render opinions on the merits of any ongoing or concluded case, nor will they be permitted to attend interviews or deliberations. Faculty and staff are additionally encouraged to discuss any question with the Faculty Advisor to the Honor Council.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All interactions between Honor Code Guides and other parties will be confidential, such that neither party will be mandated to disclose any portion of any interactions at any point in time. Only implicated parties may disclose the contents of their interactions with Honor Code Guides to the Honor Council as they deem appropriate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Vice President in conjunction with the Honor Code Guides Taskforce will maintain an assembly of Honor Code Guides and arrange for the recruiting and training of additional Honor Code Guides as required. The Vice President and Honor Code Guides Taskforce will work to maintain that assembly of Honor Code Guides are appointed from, but are not limited to, the following constituencies of the College, where one Honor Code Guide will be appointed from each:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fine Arts<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Humanities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interdisciplinary and General Studies (IGS)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM)\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social Sciences\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Staff Member<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, at the discretion of the Vice President and the Honor Code Guides Taskforce, additional Honor Code Guides can\/may be appointed to that assembly under any of the aforementioned constituencies.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor Code Guides will be appointed for two year terms, though they may serve an unlimited number of terms, pending a majority vote of the Honor Council at the conclusion of every term.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Should an Honor Code Guide resign from their position before their term has expired, the Vice President and the Honor Code Guides Taskforce will deliberate on the manner of their replacement, subject to the current assembly of Honor Code Guides.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At any time, the appointment of an Honor Code Guide can be terminated by a majority vote of the Council at one of their weekly meetings.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><strong>VI. Sanction Guidelines<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council retains full discretion in assessing all sanctions in all circumstances.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sanctions will reflect a variety of mitigating and aggravating circumstances and may change on a case-by-case basis for similar situations of academic dishonesty as a result.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aggravating factors may include, but are not limited to: failure to appear at a hearing without prior notification; intentionally deceiving the Case Investigator, Council, or course professor during the investigation and adjudication processes; evidence of premeditation with regard to the act of academic dishonesty; repeated violations of the Honor Code; plagiarism of any form, and unwillingness to cooperate with the Council at any point during the investigation and or adjudication.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitigating factors may include, but are not limited to, willingness to cooperate with the Council during the investigation and hearing, extenuating life circumstances or events, and candor displayed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following is a non-exhaustive list of potential sanctions. Creative sanctioning in line with the Constitution is certainly encouraged.<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Formal warning with or without a written reflection.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade on assignment of implication is reduced by a certain number of points.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade on assignment of implication is reduced by a certain percentage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade on assignment of implication is reduced to a zero.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade in the entire course is reduced by a certain percentage.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade in the entire course is reduced by a number of grade levels.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade in the entire course is reduced to the lowest possible passing grade for their major.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade in the entire course is reduced to the lowest possible passing grade for a non-major.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grade in the entire course is reduced to an F.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommendation for interim, semester, or year-long suspension from the College.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recommendation for expulsion from the College.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><strong>VII. Policies<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council Officers may unanimously pass internal policies that govern the minutiae of Honor Council proceedings at a level more specific than is offered by the Constitution or Bylaws.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Honor Council policies must adhere to the entirety of the Constitution and Bylaws.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All Honor Council members will be expected to follow all Honor Council policies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor Council policies may be overturned or renegotiated upon the filing of a counter-petition signed by two members of the Honor Council and a subsequent majority vote of the entire Honor Council in favor of the counter-petition at any meeting.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><strong>VIII. Honor Council Constitutional Amendment Committee<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When necessary, the Honor Council Constitution grants the Honor Council President authority to form a joint committee of faculty, staff, and students with the goal of discussing and determining a proposal to be submitted through the formal constitutional amendment process.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The voting franchise of the Honor Council Constitutional Amendment Committee will consist of the following members of the St. Olaf Community:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li>Honor Council Officers\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor Council President (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ex officio<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Chair)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor Council Vice President<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Honor Council Secretary<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Student Senate Representative\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student Government Association Vice President<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Faculty and Staff Representatives\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dean of Students<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Faculty Advisor to the Honor Council<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chair of the Student Life Committee<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proposals developed by the Honor Council Constitutional Amendment Committee must first be approved by a two-thirds majority vote of voting members of the committee in order to enter the formal constitutional amendment process as outlined in the Honor Council Constitution.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><strong>IX. Proctoring<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council acknowledges the history and culture surrounding the lack of proctoring during examinations as a fundamental component of the Honor Code. However, the Honor Council also acknowledges the ever-changing nature of the manifestation of academic dishonesty and the challenges associated with navigating these conversations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council permits faculty members to utilize their discretion in determining whether proctoring examinations best serves the pedagogical needs of their students. Proctoring is permitted per this faculty-choice model with complete adherence to the Honor Council Process and its associated policies.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council encourages that best practices are utilized in the event faculty members decide to proctor examinations. Some common points to consider with respect to proctoring include:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect of proctoring on the speed at which questions are answered during examinations.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect of proctoring on exam-associated anxiety and stress.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect of proctoring on the potential increase of implicit bias.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The effect of proctoring on the culture of the Honor Council at St. Olaf College.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h6><b>X. Syllabus Statements<\/b><\/h6>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Honor Council acknowledges the liberty that is afforded to course professors in the direct authoring and dissemination of syllabus statements. With respect to the Honor Code at St. Olaf College, the following aspects should be addressed:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>General Statement. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Brief description of the Honor Code at St. Olaf College, drawn from the Honor Council\u2019s mission statement or adapted from materials found on the Honor Council\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/honorcouncil\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">website.<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Permitted Resources.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Explicit statement of resources permitted to be used during examinations and other course assessments.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Test Etiquette. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Definition of the baseline norms regarding proper test etiquette during examinations. Common examples include, but are not limited to, expectations that students:<\/span>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are not allowed to access any books, electronic devices, or other materials not explicitly approved by the professor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are not allowed to talk to each other, unless given permission by the professor.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">should try to ensure their line of sight does not cause an individual to reasonably suspect them of academic dishonesty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"3\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are not allowed to bring their examination outside of their designated examination area without prior permission from the professor.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Honor Code Reflection. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal reflection from the course professor on what the Honor Code and academic integrity means to them and their course.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><b>Resources.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Additional research if necessary, including, but not limited to: the Honor Council\u2019s website, the Honor Council Bylaws, FAQs, and other related material.<\/span><\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><!-- begin-migrated-from-panel-builder --><!-- end-migrated-from-panel-builder --><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Honor Council Bylaws Last Amended: January 07, 2024 Archived Amendments I.
