Data from these comparison institutions can provide helpful context in making decisions or evaluating outcomes.&nbsp; The criteria used to select the group follows the list of institutions below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-not-stacked-on-mobile is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Agnes Scott College (GA)<br \/>Allegheny College (PA)<br \/>Dickinson College (PA)<br \/>Gettysburg College (PA)<br \/>Gustavus Adolphus College (MN)<br \/>Hendrix College (AR)<br \/>Hobart and William Smith Colleges (NY)<br \/>Kalamazoo College (MI)<br \/>Knox College (IL)<br \/>Lawrence University (WI)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lewis &amp; Clark College (OR)<br \/>Ohio Wesleyan University (OH)<br \/>Saint Mary\u2019s College (IN)<br \/>Sarah Lawrence College (NY)<br \/>St. John\u2019s University (MN)<br \/>St. Lawrence University (NY)<br \/>The College of Wooster (OH)<br \/>Westmont College (CA)<br \/>Wheaton College (IL)<br \/>Wheaton College (MA)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The comparison group was selected from <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an initial pool of<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">private, not for profit <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">institutions with the following <a href=\"https:\/\/carnegieclassifications.acenet.edu\/\">Carnegie Classification<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characteristics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Majority of students are undergraduate (Enrollment Profile)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some or no graduate degrees awarded (Undergraduate Instructional Program)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Four-year small or medium size, highly residential <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Size and Setting)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selective or more selective, lower transfer in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(Undergraduate Profile)<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primarily arts &amp; sciences majors awarded, or balanced with professional majors (Undergraduate Instructional Program)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For each of the institutions in this initial pool, we calculated the total annual financial resources per student FTE, averaged over three years (FY2020, FY2021, FY2022), using publicly-available data from the federal Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/ipeds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IPEDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).&nbsp; Total annual resources consisted of revenues from:<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tuition and fees<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Government grants and contracts<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Private gifts, grants, or contracts\/contributions from affiliated entities<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other core revenues<\/span><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5% of endowment assets (year end)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We then rank-ordered the initial pool of institutions, including St. Olaf, according to their 3-year average total annual resources\/student FTE.&nbsp; The final institutional comparison group consists of the 10 institutions immediately above and below St. Olaf, relative to this measure of financial resources, so that St. Olaf\u2019s financial resources would be at the median for our 20 comparison institutions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Comparison group updated 3\/14\/2024<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>St. Olaf has identified a group of twenty higher education institutions that are similar to the college in a number of important respects.
