An approved RCL allows an F-1 student to keep their legal status while registering for less than 3 credits in a semester. Acceptable reasons are listed below. A request must be supported by a student\u2019s academic adviser and pre-approved by the PDSO before it takes effect. <\/span><b>Dropping below a full course of study without prior approval from the PDSO results in a loss of legal status and the loss of on and off-campus employment eligibility.<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Steps for Requesting a Reduced Course Load<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Discuss your situation with your academic adviser BEFORE submitting an RCL request. Your academic adviser cannot approve your request before having this discussion. Failure to contact your adviser may cause serious delays in processing your request. A student may request an RCL only <\/span><b>one time<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> per semester.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Download the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/files\/2016\/11\/RCL-Form.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RCL request form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, fill it out, and have your academic advisor sign it. If your advisor has questions about the RCL or the Form, they are welcome to contact <a href=\"lamont3@stolaf.edu\">Caitlin Lamont Kreienkamp<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PDSO.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bring the RCL form signed by your academic advisor to the PDSO. Based on your advisor\u2019s recommendation, the PDSO will either approve or deny your request.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If you choose reason #3 (Medical Reason), a recommendation from your academic adviser is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not required<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Instead, complete the RCL form and bring a supporting letter from a <\/span><b>licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or clinical psychologist<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. If the letter is acceptable, the PDSO will approve your request.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a04. Once your RCL request is approved by the PDSO and (except for Medical reasons) your academic advisor, you may change your registration. If your request is approved after the drop\/add deadline, you will additionally be required to submit a petition to the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/catalog.stolaf.edu\/academic-regulations-procedures\/changes-registration-petitions-late-changes\/\">Registrar\u2019s Office<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Acceptable Reasons For A Reduced Course Load\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Final Semester and Less than a Full Course Load is Needed to Complete Student&#8217;s Program of Study<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For students who need less than a full-course load to graduate in the specified term. <\/span><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students must be registered for at least one in-person course during their final semester.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students must be registered for all their remaining <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">required <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coursework during the specified semester.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students with an academic difficulty RCL are not eligible to register concurrently at another university or community college unless they are pre-approved by the PDSO for extenuating circumstances.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>First Year and Having Academic Difficulty due to<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improper course level placement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Initial difficulty with English language or reading requirements<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfamiliarity with U.S. teaching methods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If a student fears the possibility of doing poorly in a course but their situation is not reflected by one of the 3 reasons listed above, they are <\/span><b>not <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eligible for an RCL based on academic difficulty.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An academic difficulty RCL may only be used one time (one semester) <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students must maintain half-time enrollment during the semester of the reduced course load.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Medical Reason<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limited to 12 months of reduced course load.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requires a supporting letter from a licensed medical doctor, doctor of osteopathy, or clinical psychologist. The letter does not need to state the specific medical condition, but must indicate that <\/span><b>the condition requires less than full-time enrollment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Participating in either a Full-Time Required Internship, or a Full-Time Co-Op<\/b>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Requires evidence that the internship is a requirement of the program, or documentation that the student is participating in a co-op program.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students in an academic program requiring a full-time internship need to provide documented evidence indicating employment is required for degree completion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students who participate in a co-op program need to provide documented evidence of co-op approval from your college or academic department.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><b>Unacceptable Reasons for a Reduced Course Load<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Financial difficulties<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medical illness of family member<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preparing for GMAT, GRE, CPA, or similar exams<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Suspension from academic program<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working on incompletes from a previous semester<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auditing courses<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><b>Failure to Enroll Full-Time Without an Approved Reduced Course Load\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/maintaining-your-immigration-status\/#Violate Legal Status\">Violation of Legal Status<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results in the loss of eligibility to maintain<\/span><a style=\"font-weight: 400;\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/employment-on-campus\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on-campus employment<\/span><\/a><br \/>\n<h2 style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/h2>\n<p><b><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/forms-and-resources\/\">Forms and Resources<\/a>\u00a0<\/b>for the appropriate form to be filled.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/registrar\/calendars\/\">Academic Year Calendars<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">for details on drop\/add deadlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A student may request a reduced course load (RCL) if they meet the criteria outlined by immigration regulations.
