{"id":51,"date":"2016-06-08T14:09:31","date_gmt":"2016-06-08T19:09:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/?page_id=51"},"modified":"2023-06-07T08:24:03","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T13:24:03","slug":"program-extension","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/program-extension\/","title":{"rendered":"Program Extension"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Program Extension is required if a student is unable to complete all degree requirements by the Program End Date noted in Item 5 of the Form I-20. A Program Extension application must be submitted to and approved by the PDSO before the I-20 expiration date. Failure to process a Program Extension before the expiration of the I-20 results in the loss of legal status and the ability to work on the campus.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Students cannot apply for full-time <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/cpt\/\">Curricular Practical Training (CPT)<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">after a Program Extension has been processed, nor will a Program Extension be approved for the purpose of participating in an internship for CPT.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Eligibility<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student must be in legal F-1 status<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I-20 must reflect student\u2019s current program of study<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Student must possess valid passport<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delays in completion must be caused by compelling academic or medical reasons, such as:<\/span>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Changes of major <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Documented illness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Delays caused by academic probation or suspension are not acceptable reasons for a Program Extension<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A student who has been authorized 12 months or more of full-time <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/cpt\/\">CPT<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and\/or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pre-Completion <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/opt\/\">OPT<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is not eligible for a Program Extension.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Students unsure of their eligibility for a Program Extension should consult with the PDSO. Students who are not eligible for a Program Extension should make every effort to complete their program of study before their I-20 expires. Failure to complete the program will result in the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/maintaining-your-immigration-status\/#Violate Legal Status\">loss of legal status<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and the need to file for Reinstatement with the Dept of Homeland Security, if eligible, or to make a new entry into the U.S. with an \u201cinitial attendance\u201d I-20. This will result in the student losing eligibility for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/off-campus-employment\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">off-campus employment opportunities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Students should consult with an ISSS Adviser regarding their options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Application<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to submitting the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/files\/2016\/11\/Program-Extension-Form.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Program Extension Application Form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, students must also submit the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<h5>Academic Reason for Program Extension<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtain a letter from your academic adviser that contains the following information:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A detailed reason for the delay in completion<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where the student is currently at in their program<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When student will be expected to complete all degree requirements.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Medical Reason for Program Extension<\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Obtain letter from Physician verifying:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">llness prohibited the student from completing their program by the original I-20 end date<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dates of illness<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/international-student-immigration\/files\/2016\/11\/RCL-Form.pdf\">Reduced Course Load Form<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (if needed)<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/financialaid\/files\/2012\/08\/2016-17_International_Student_Certification_of_Finances.pdf\">International Student Certification of Finances<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> form<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Approval Process<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit original copies of all required documents to the PDSO. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PDSO will review the application. If the PDSO does not feel the academic advisor\u2019s letter meets with DHS regulations, the student will be asked to obtain another letter.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approval of the Program Extension will result in the issuance of a new I-20 that reflects a new completion date.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Denial of the Program Extension will result in the need for student to apply to the DHS for Reinstatement of Legal Status or make a re-entry into the U.S. with an \u201cinitial attendance\u201d I-20.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><!-- begin-migrated-from-panel-builder --><!-- end-migrated-from-panel-builder --><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Program Extension is required if a student is unable to complete all degree requirements by the Program End Date noted in Item 5 of the Form I-20.
