Domestic Scholarships

HECUA Scholarship for Social Justice

Duration: Semester
Study locations: Ecuador, Norway, Northern Ireland, New Zealand, USA
Purpose: To increase access to HECUA programs for students who are from low income families, from communities of color or are the first in their families to attend college by awarding financial aid for study on HECUA semester programs
Eligibility: Must be participating in a HECUA program and be a first-generation college student, student from a low-income background, or a student of color.
Award based on: Awarded to students who meet the above qualifications
Award amount: $1500
Procedure: Complete application, scholarship essay, and, if low-income, complete FAFSA.
Application deadline: April 15 if participating in an international program and December 1 if a domestic program

HECUA Scholarship for Racial Justice

Purpose: To assist students of color with financial aid for study on HECUA programs
Eligibility: Must be participating on a HECUA program and be a student of color
Award based on: Awarded to students who meet the above qualifications
Award amount: $4000
Procedure: Complete application with reflective essay. Nomination by a faculty or staff member at your home college is encouraged
Application deadline: April 15 if participating in an international program and December 1 if a domestic program

Purpose: To assist students who are committed to community engagement for social change
Eligibility: Must be participating on a HECUA program
Award based on: Awarded to students who meet the above qualifications
Award amount: $750 for semester/$333.3 for short-term
Procedure: Complete application with reflective essay.

Washington Semester
Administered by: American University
Purpose: To assist students who do not receive funding from their home institutions in participating in the Washington Semester
Eligibility: Participant on Washington Semester; not receiving financial support from their home institution
Awards based on: Financial need
Procedure: Complete the AU Visiting Student Consortium Agreement and submit your FAFSA to AU

Vincet L. Hawkinson Foundation for Peace/Justice Scholarship
Administered by: Vincent L. Hawkinson Foundation (c/o Grace University Lutheran Church)
Eligibility: Must be a resident or student in MN, IA, WI, ND or SD
Awards based on: Awarded to students who have demonstrated a commitment to peace and justice through study, internships or projects.
Award amount: $4,000 – $5,000
Procedure: Fill out application, including demonstrating how using the scholarship for study, a project, or an internship will deepen their commitment to peace and justice and promote peace and justice for others. Interview required.
