Financial Aid and Loans

St. Olaf students participating in St. Olaf off-campus programs are eligible to retain the financial aid they would receive while studying on camps, with an exception that student work is not available while a student is participating in an off-campus program.

It is important to work with the St. Olaf Financial Aid Office to achieve the best possible financing for your off-campus program. Your federal, state and institutional grants, scholarships and loans may be used for St. Olaf off-campus semester and year programs. You may revise your yearly financial aid request to reflect the additional cost of off-campus programs. Extra loans, such as the SELF loan are also available.

How Financial Aid is Used for Off-Campus Study

  1. Financial Aid first goes towards any accumulated charges on the St. Olaf student account (tuition, off-campus program fee, health insurance,  parking tickets, miscellaneous charges, etc.)
  2. If a credit remains on the student account, students may place an “Account Refund Request” through SIS to have direct access to the available funding.
Refund payments will only be paid to students with a credit on their account. In order to request a refund you must complete the online SIS Refund Request Form. Requests submitted by Monday at 3:00 PM will be paid that Friday. Requests submitted after 3:00 PM Monday will be paid the following Friday. Checks will be available for pick-up after 11:00 AM on Fridays, unless otherwise indicated. Student signatures and picture ID are required to pick up checks at the Business Office window. We cannot send any checks to students PO boxes on campus.

Scholarship assistance is available to help in meeting the additional program costs associated with off-campus programs.  Students interested in receiving information about scholarships should visit our scholarship listings and/or contact the International and Off-Campus Studies or the Office for Financial Aid.  Some program-specific and non-St. Olaf funded scholarships are also available. Application deadlines and scholarship requirements vary, so it is important to explore scholarships options early.

Students who do not attend St. Olaf College should seek financial aid through their home institutions. St. Olaf provides financial aid only to those students who have been formally admitted and intend to graduate from St. Olaf.
