Government responses and public health policy around COVID-19 varies around the world; responses to COVID-19 are often location and culture-specific. As global vaccination numbers are still low, the pandemic is still unpredictable and fast-moving variants have caused new waves of infections around the world.
Access to health care and vaccinations have revealed deep inequities in global health care; many countries are still waiting to access vaccinations for their populations. The lasting impact of the pandemic is unknown. With these realities in mind, it is even more important to be informed about your host community, understand the implications of COVID-19 on healthcare access, and be attentive to the ethics of travel.
- As St. Olaf students, you are required to be vaccinated to participate in Off-campus Study, however, you will still be bound by regulations sent by your host country or program. When preparing for your semester or year abroad, be sure to look to the COVID-19 webpage of the university or program you are attending.
- Stay up to date on CDC and WHO recommendations and guidelines.
- Stay up to date on your destination’s governmental and health recommendations and whether quarantining will be necessary upon your arrival. If you are participating in a program within the U.S., check state, territorial, tribal and local public health policies. Policies can change quickly so continue to monitor prior to departure.
