We are excited to help you begin your journey! Our advising team is on-hand to guide you through the off-campus study process.

Many students know that they want to study off-campus but are not quite sure when, where, what or how to study off-campus.  At St. Olaf College, off-campus study is possible for students in every major/concentration, but it requires planning ahead.  We encourage students to visit with International and Off-Campus Studies (IOS) as early as the first semester of their first year.

Our types of advising are designed for the stage of planning you are currently engaged with, the specific program you are applying to, or the types of questions you have. We can help you in various ways; from picking a program best suited to your goals to assisting you with the application process.  IOS Advising is available through Off-Campus Study information sessions, one-on-one with an IOS Peer Advisor and one-on-one with the IOS Advisor.  With advising, IOS can help you find and plan a program that meets your needs.

IOS recommends beginning your off-campus study journey by attending an Off-Campus Study 101 information session as preparation for advising appointments.  Off-Campus Study 101 provides an overview of the IOS website and resources, programs offered, the application process, and more. We recommend you attend Off-Campus Study 101 before making an individual advising appointment.

Another great starting point for off-campus study advising is meeting with an IOS Peer Advisor.  IOS Peer Advisors are current St. Olaf students who have studied off-campus on an IOS program who are available for peer-to-peer advising.  Advising with an IOS Peer Advisors is best for those beginning their off-campus study research or those looking to get a bit more information following attending a 101 Session.  IOS Peer Advisors can help with general and process-oriented questions, and can offer a student to student perspective.

After attending an IOS Off-Campus Study 101 Session and/or meeting with a peer advisor, you are encouraged to will schedule a one-on-one appointment with the IOS Advisor.  IOS Advisor Brittan Duffing is well-versed in the many options available to help you choose an appropriate program. When discussing off-campus study opportunities, Brittan takes into account each student’s academic, personal, and financial needs and goals.   IOS Advisor appointments are best for general questions that cannot be addressed by a peer adviser, matters of personal identity, and general programmatic, academic planning, and financial questions.

Hello! My name is Elsa and my pronouns are she/her/hers. I am originally from Seattle, Washington and am a member of the class of 2022. I am majoring in biology and psychology with a concentration in neuroscience. In January 2020, I completed an interim program abroad in Ecuador to fulfill my Spanish language requirement. It was a great way to improve my Spanish skills, meet more St. Olaf students, and see a new part of the world. I am looking forward to helping students learn about the off-campus opportunities offered by St. Olaf, as well as things to think about when deciding to apply for an off-campus experience.
