Blocks are the gray boxes found on both sidebars of your Moodle site. Their primary purpose is to provide important information quickly. Several blocks automatically appear, including the Navigation and Administration blocks. Many more types of blocks can be added, including calendars and upcoming events. The following instructions will guide you through adding new blocks and customizing existing ones.
How do I add new blocks?
- Navigate to your course homepage and turn editing on.
- Scroll down to the bottom of the left sidebar.
- Within Add a Block, select types of blocks to add. If you would like to embed a widget, select HTML.
What do the icons on the blocks mean?
When editing is turned on, blocks have several icons in the upper right corner. The map of an undocked block in a sidebar is shown below.
Hide collapses the block into a horizontal bar. Select it again to expand block.
Dock collapses the block into a button on the upper left corner of the page.
Actions is a menu where you can configure the block, change its visibility to students, and delete the block. Editing and embedding in a block is possible under the Configure block option.
Move allows you to drag and drop the block wherever desired on the sidebar.
The icons of a docked block are shown below.
Undock moves the block back to its original sidebar.
Actions functions as before.
Hide the dock panel is currently non-functional.
Now that your course is equipped with blocks on the sidebars or in the dock, it is time to add interactive activities or assignments.
