Formatting Topics

The following guide will show you how to format the topics on your Moodle site. You can change their appearance, quantity, contents, and order to best fit your needs.

How do I change how my course is divided? How do I change the number of weeks in my course?

  1.  Navigate to your course homepage and turn editing on.
  2. Find the Administration block in the left sidebar (underneath the Navigation block) and select Edit settings.
  3. Scroll down almost to the bottom of the page and select Course format.
  4. To change how your course is divided, select a format in the Format menu. Collapsed topics and Weekly format are most recommended. Each format is described below.
    • Single activity format – For displaying a single activity or resource on the course page.
    • Social format – A forum is displayed on the course page.
    • Collapsed topics – The course page is organized into topic sections, but students can collapse and expand each section for easy viewing.
    • Topics format – The course page is organized into topic sections.
    • Weekly format – The course page is organized into weekly sections, with the first week starting on the course start date.


4. Under Number of sections, select the number of topics or weeks.

5. Scroll to the bottom of the page and select Save and return.

How do I change the title and summary of each topic?

  1. Navigate to your course homepage and turn editing on.
  2. To change the introduction section, select Edit on the right hand side. You can also select the Edit tool beside the section title. 
  3. Once you have clicked into the edit tool, select Custom to start editing. 
  4. You can now edit the topic name and summary. Save changes when you are finished.

Now that you have your organized your course into topics, you can begin uploading files to each section.
