Installing Mathematica for Mac

Mathematica is a computational software program used in math and science. St. Olaf has a site license for Mathematica that allows installations on college-owned and faculty/staff-owned computers. Additionally, students can install a student version of Mathematica for use on their personal computers. St. Olaf is currently running Mathematica version 10.2. It is available for both Windows and Macintosh computers.

Below are instructions for installing Mathematica on Macintosh computers.

Student-Owned Computer: Mathematica Installation for Mac

The student installation is suitable for use by students who wish to install a copy of Mathematica on their personally-owned computers. It can be used while not connected to the St. Olaf network. This option requires a registration process and activation code from Wolfram before starting the Mathematica installation, so students will need to create a user account on Wolfram’s site.

  1. In a web browser, go to the Mathematica Activation Key Request Form.
  2. If you already have a Wolfram account, enter your Wolfram ID (typically your email address) and password and click Sign In.
    1. If you do not have an account, create one with your @stolaf.edu email address. Enter your email address, first name, last name, password (twice), enter the confirmation code and click Create Wolfram ID.
    2. If you have an account but have forgotten the password, click the Forgot Your Password? link.
    3. Important Note: Use your St. Olaf email address to register with Wolfram. Activation requests from St. Olaf email addresses are automatically approved.
  3. On the Mathematica Activation Key Request Form, under “Product”, select Mathematica for Sites (Single Machine); under “Version”, select the version that your professor requested. Click Submit.
  4. This will generate an activation key. This activation key will be used to install Mathematica. A copy of it is also sent to your email address.
  5. In your web browser, go to the Wolfram My Products page.
  6. Click the “Get downloads” link.
  7. At the bottom of the page, select the Download button for your operating system – Windows, macOS, or Linux.
