Using the Text Editor

For adding summaries to topics, posting on forums, and any time you add text to your Moodle site, you will use what is called a text editor. The default text editor in Moodle, Atto, functions similarly to Microsoft Word. Most of its function are clear (bold, italics, bulleted lists, etc.), but it has a few uses that are less apparent. They are described below.

Show more buttons

Most buttons are hidden by default. To show all buttons, select the symbol in the upper left corner of the editor.

Some of the symbols in the expanded view may be unfamiliar to you. Take some time to review their functions in the map below.

How do I add an image?

As a file:

  1. Drag the file from your desktop, “Pictures” folder, or USB drive directly onto the text editor.
  2. Select the Insert Image button to edit the properties of the image.

From the Internet (or as a file):

  1. Place your cursor where you would like to insert an image.
  2. Select the Insert Image button.
  3. If inserting an image from the Internet, enter the URL in the first field and skip to step 7.
  4. If inserting an image not directly from a webpage, select Browse repositories.
  5. Select the appropriate option in the File Picker. For example, to insert an image from your desktop or your “Pictures” folder, select Upload a file.
  6. Select Upload this fileSelect this file, or Submit, depending on your upload method.
  7. Enter a brief description of the image. This alternate text is useful for those who use adaptive software to read a computer screen. It also helps search engines sort your page correctly.
  8. Select Save image.

How do I edit the size/name/alignment of an image once it is inserted?

  1. Select the image in the editor. It will now be highlighted in blue.
  2. Select the Insert Image button.
  3. Edit the settings as desired.
  4. Select Save image.

How do I add a sound file or video?

  1. Place your cursor where you would like to insert the media.
  2. Select the Media button.
  3. If embedding from the Internet, enter the URL in the first field and skip to step 7.
  4. If inserting from another place, select Browse repositories.
  5. Select the appropriate option in the File Picker. For example, to insert a sound file from your desktop or your “Music” folder, select Upload a file
  6. Select Upload this fileSelect this file, or Submit, depending on your upload method.
  7. Name the file in the Enter name field.
  8. Select Insert media.

How do I upload all my files at once?

Files can be added in bulk with the Manage files button. Drag and drop the files or folders to be uploaded onto the outlined box in red. When finished, close the file manager with the X in the upper right corner.

How do I add links?

  1. Highlight the text from the editor you would like to add a link to.
  2. Select the Insert Link button.
  3. Enter the URL (web address) of your desired link in the pop-up window and select Create Link.

How do I edit links?

  1. High the linked text.
  2. Select the Insert Link button.
  3. Edit the link as desired.
  4. Select Create link.

 How do I remove links?

  1. Highlight the linked text.
  2. Select the Unlink button. Your link is now removed.

How do I add a table?

  1. Place your cursor where you would like to add a table.
  2. Select the Table button.
  3. Enter a caption and the number of rows and columns.
  4. Select Create table.

How do I edit a table’s properties?

  1. Place your cursor in an entry in the table.
  2. Select the Table button.
  3. Insert, move, or delete rows and columns as desired.

How do I add an equation?

  1. Place your cursor where you would like to add an equation.
  2. Select the Equation editor button.
  3. Use the buttons to insert symbols. Numbers, letters, and characters from the keyboard can by typed as normal.
  4. Select Save equation.

How do I edit an equation already inserted?

  1. Highlight the equation from \( to \).
  2. Select the Equation editor button.
  3. Edit as desired.
  4. Select Save equation.
