It is free and open-source software and can be installed on any computer. IT maintains an installer for Windows to ease the installation process. Octave is installed on computers in the Physics department labs: RNS271, RNS292, RNS293 and RNS298.<\/p>\n<p>Follow these instructions to install Octave on your computer.<\/p>\n<p>1. Make sure you are connected to the network file storage, specifically the I: drive. For information on connecting, see <a title=\"Network File Storage at St. Olaf\" href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/it\/network-file-storage\/\">Network File Storage at St. Olaf<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>2. Navigate to I:Octave.<\/p>\n<p>3. Right-click on <strong>install-octave.bat<\/strong> and select <strong>Run as administrator<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>4. The installer will copy the Octave files to C:Octave on your computer and place a shortcut on your desktop. Double-click on the desktop shortcut to start Octave.<\/p>\n<p>St. Olaf IT recommends the text editor <a href=\"http:\/\/notepad-plus-plus.org\/\">Notepad++<\/a> for writing and editing Octave files.<\/p>\n<h3>Important information for Windows 10 and 8 users<\/h3>\n<p>Octave is not completely compatible with Windows 10 and 8. If you install it on Windows 10 or 8, you will not see the typical &#8220;octave&gt;&#8221; prompt, and certain functions, such as plotting, will not work. There is a work-around:<\/p>\n<p>1. Right-click on the desktop shortcut for Octave and select <strong>Properties<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>2. In the Target: field, add the following text to the end of the line &#8220;-i &#8211;line-editing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4897 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/wp.stolaf.edu\/it\/wp-content\/blogs.dir\/12\/files\/2013\/09\/octave-shortcut-win8.png?resize=386%2C533&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"octave-shortcut-win8\" width=\"386\" height=\"533\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3.
