{"id":747,"date":"2017-10-12T08:54:12","date_gmt":"2017-10-12T13:54:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/japanese\/?page_id=747"},"modified":"2023-06-07T08:24:52","modified_gmt":"2023-06-07T13:24:52","slug":"japanese-language","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/japanese\/japanese-language\/","title":{"rendered":"Japanese Language"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><p>To fulfill a Japanese major, students will demonstrate both linguistic and cultural competence.<\/p>\n<h4>Requirements for the Japanese Major<\/h4>\n<p>The major consists of\u00a0<strong>nine<\/strong> courses.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Four\u00a0<\/strong>core language courses:\n<ul>\n<li>JAPAN 231: Intermediate Japanese I<\/li>\n<li>JAPAN 232: Intermediate Japanese II<\/li>\n<li>JAPAN 301: Advanced Japanese I<\/li>\n<li>JAPAN 302: Advanced Japanese II<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>One<\/strong> language course above JAPAN 302, such as:\n<ul>\n<li>JAPAN 320: Special Topics in Japanese<\/li>\n<li>An equivalent course taken during an approved study abroad language program<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Four<\/strong> courses, taught in English, focused on Japan\/Japanese language and culture:\n<ul>\n<li>At least one must examine transnationalism\/regionalism\/global perspectives<\/li>\n<li>At least one must be 300-level<\/li>\n<li>No more than one may be 100-level<\/li>\n<li>One may be an Independent Study or an Asian Studies senior seminar (ASIAN 397 and ASIAN 399)<\/li>\n<li>The Asian Conversations sequence (ASIAN 210, 215\/216, 220) may count for no more than two<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"Normal1\"><strong>Please see <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/japanese\/files\/2020\/08\/Japanese-Major-Planning-Worksheet-2020-21-1.pdf\">attached worksheet<\/a> for specific course requirements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Additionally, Japanese majors are highly encouraged to spend a <a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/asian-studies\/student-abroad\/\">semester or year abroad<\/a>.<\/h4>\n<p><!-- begin-migrated-from-panel-builder --><!-- end-migrated-from-panel-builder --><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>To fulfill a Japanese major, students will demonstrate both linguistic and cultural competence.
