Your liaison will work with you to customize a session that meets the needs of your students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Overviews and Introductions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>How is knowledge generated and organized by specific disciplines?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Which voices need to be considered for this project: scholars? the general public? journalists? government?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What categories of resources would provide access to these voices?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>How does one organize a research process for a particular project?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ideas for Specific Concepts and Skills<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Will your students need to select and narrow a topic? (10-30 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Brainstorming a topic based on assignment criteria<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identifying keywords, synonyms, and controlled vocabulary on their topic<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Browsing relevant resources for background information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Articulating a research question or thesis statement<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will students be using library catalogs (local and\/or beyond) to do searches on their topic? (15-60 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Determining the nature and scope of literature indexed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Searching with natural language keywords and phrases<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Browsing or searching the database thesaurus or controlled vocabulary<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Evaluating results lists for relevance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Checking for full-text availability and making Resource Sharing requests<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Revising search strategies for related or more focused results<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saving results<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will students need to understand the difference between scholarly (peer-reviewed) and popular publications? (10-20 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Discussing scholarly vs popular publishing procedures<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determining the scope, purpose, and target audiences<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will students need to identify and evaluate web resources? (15-30 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognizing and distinguishing between fee-based vs free websites<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Using advanced Google search<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyzing website organization and search capabilities<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determining the scope, audience, and currency of information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Determining the authority, accuracy, and perspective of sources<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Analyzing the relevance of information for an information need<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will students need to track down scholarship cited in bibliographies and references? (10-20 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognizing which elements of citation to use for tracking purposes<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choosing an appropriate venue to locate cited materials (catalogs, periodical list, Google, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will students need to learn about documentation and plagiarism? (10-20 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Recognizing elements of a citation<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Distinguishing book, article, and media citations in various styles<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Understanding why citations differ from style to style<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will students be required to use Zotero to organize and cite sources? (15-60 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Becoming familiar with the capabilities of Zotero<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Saving items to Zotero<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Editing records and creating annotations<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Formatting bibliographies<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Will students need to know the physical layout of Rolvaag or the Music library? (10-30 minutes)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Becoming comfortable with finding physical reference materials, periodicals, DVDs, etc.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Developing a sense of how materials are shelved<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Learning about service points (circulation, reserves, reference, DiSCO, etc.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"model\"><a><\/a>What model should you choose?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Possibilities are endless, and we&#8217;d love to experiment with you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Brief Sessions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We are happy to pop in at strategic points in the research project sequence! The visit can take any shape or form&#8211;from clarifying a concept or research tool to diving into 10-15 minutes of hands-on database search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Full Sessions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One focused session:Reference librarians spend a class period walking your students through the research process centered on the assignment.
