Came out. Got booted.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8211;<em>John Baumeister<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0\u201cFollowed rules, not dreams. Never again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8211;<em>Margaret Hellerstein<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cOn the playground, alone. 1970, today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8211;<em>Charles Warren<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u00a0\u201cEveryone who loved me is dead.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8211;<em>Ellen Fanning<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cTime to start over again, again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8211;<em>Dan Petronelli<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And, still one of my favorite \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cAsked to quiet down; spoke louder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8211;<em>Wendy Lee.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It wasn\u2019t long<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">before six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">became a regular spiritual practice for me.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Review the day<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">in six words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Portray the experience<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">in six words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Process the feelings<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">in six words.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Succinctly summarize<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">both joys and sorrows,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">trials and triumphs,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">hopes and fears<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">in six words,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Day after day,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Week after week,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Month after month &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It became a framework<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">to put things into a healthy perspective,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">to both celebrate<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and let things go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Before I knew it,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I found myself<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">thinking in six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">about things both<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">humorous<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and serious.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It even became a part of my<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">sermon preparation \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Write the sermon in six words \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and then write the whole sermon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It was \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and is \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Both life-giving<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and life-saving.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When the pandemic descended<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">upon<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and engulfed the world<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">in early 2020,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I found myself<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">wondering what I could do<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">that would give people<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">a space,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">a place,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and community<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">amid lockdown<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and isolation<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">to not feel so alone.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">We couldn\u2019t be together,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">but we needed each other.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">With so much<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Upended<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And suspended,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I \u2013 we \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Needed some way to<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Articulate,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Put into words &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Name<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">what we were<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Thinking,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Feeling,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and Experiencing<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">amid so much fear and uncertainty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Late one night,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In March of 2020,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I formed a Facebook group &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cSix Word Snapshots.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The timeline photo<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">said then,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And still says now &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cStaying home<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Washing hands<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Praying more.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The invitation is this:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In six words only,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">write about what you are doing<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">amid these changing times.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What brings you joy?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">How has your life changed?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What are your challenges?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">How are you passing the time?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">How are you<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">&#8220;making the best of it?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What are you thinking about it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Remember \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">six words only \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">no more, no less!<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I invited a handful of my friends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">They invited more.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And it grew exponentially<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In a matter of hours.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People responded<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And with one six-word post<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">after another,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">a community was formed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote of their sorrows:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>And suddenly tears, despite the sun.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote of their exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>I miss my motivation. Too tired.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote of their loved ones who were sick:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Rest eternally, Dad. Kick COVID, Mom.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote of strained relationships:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Painful relationship with mother. Weird day.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote of unemployment:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Husband\u2019s job loss is permanent. Sigh.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote of the unsettled-ness of time:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Really? It\u2019s not Friday? Who knew?<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote of the everyday things that were keeping them going:<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Warm, delicious homemade cinnamon raison bread.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">People wrote<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and wrote<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and wrote,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and they are still writing.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">The posts are more infrequent now<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and are often not related to the pandemic \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Prayers, friend&#8217;s heart valve surgery tomorrow<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Friends&#8217; happiness makes my heart giggle<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Yippee, back to work at 80<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>Making play dough tonight! Kneading \u2026Therapeutic.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">But there is something profoundly holy<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">about this<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">six-word experience<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and the ongoing way that<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">it meets people\u2019s needs<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">to speak<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and be heard,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">to name something \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">anything, really &#8211;<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and have someone respond.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In recent months,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">my personal six-word practice<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">has taken on<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">yet another<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">a new form.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Through my work as the<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Program Director for Congregational Thriving<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">at St. Olaf College,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I have the privilege of<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">stewarding<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/nourishing-vocation\"><em>The Nourishing Vocation Project<\/em><\/a><em>,<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">a project through the<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Lutheran Center<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">for Faith, Values, and Community<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">with generous support from<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Lilly Endowment Inc.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The Nourishing Vocation Project<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">is a four-phase experience<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">that invites individual participants<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and whole congregations<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">to deepen their understanding<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">of God\u2019s call<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">upon their life and work<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">so that they can thrive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Foundational to this project<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">is a spiritual practice<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">that I have created, called<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>Vocare.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wp.stolaf.edu\/nourishing-vocation\/vocare-spiritual-practices\/\"><strong><em>Vocare<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em>,<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">from the Latin,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">meaning \u201cto call,\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">is designed to<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">help you discern<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and embrace<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">your multiple vocations<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">so that<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">you can more intentionally<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">live life on purpose<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">for the common good.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>Vocare<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">invites ongoing reflection upon<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">six words \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Values,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Openness,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Call,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Attentiveness,\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Regrets,<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Experiences<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">of God\u2019s presence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong><em>Vocare<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">invites you to regularly<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">dwell with these questions \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What do I<strong> value<\/strong>,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and how am I living my values?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">To what am I being asked to be <strong>open<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">How do I respond?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What voices are <strong>calling<\/strong> to me?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Which ones do I listen to, and why?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Where am I giving my <strong>attention<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Does my attention align with my values?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What are my<strong> regrets<\/strong>?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">What insight do I gain from them?<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">When, where, and how have I <strong>experienced<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">the presence of the God in my everyday life?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Values<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Openness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Call<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Attentiveness<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Regret<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><strong>Experience<\/strong> \u2013<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">Six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">that can<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">nourish ongoing discernment,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">that can<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">nourish the pursuit of purpose,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">that can<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">nourish the living of<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">our multiple vocations in daily life,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">that can<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">lead you to more intentionally<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>live life on purpose for the common good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"\">I commend this practice<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and its six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">to you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Incorporate it<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">into something you are already doing \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Put these six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">in your head<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and write them on your heart.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Think on them<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">when you go for a walk,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Or<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Commute to work,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Or<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Have your devotions,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Or<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Mow your lawn,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Or<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Sit down at table with your family,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Or<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Take a shower,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Or<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Plan your budget,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Or<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Lay out your monthly calendar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Give them space in your thoughts<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">when you go to bed at night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Let them greet you<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">when you wake<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">In the morning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Welcome them<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">as a companion<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">on your daily journey \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">whatever that journey may be<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">and wherever that journey<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">may take you.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">You just might be surprised at how<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">these six words<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">lead you to clarity<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">when life is confusing \u2013<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"\">Point you toward intention<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">when meaning is allusive,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">And deepen your understanding<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">of God\u2019s call<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">upon your life and work \u2013<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">in the everyday moments<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">of everyday life<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">so that<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">you can<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">more intentionally,<\/p>\n<p class=\"\"><em>live life on purpose for the common good.<\/em><\/p>\n<p
