Events"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-modular-content-collection><div>\n<div class=\"yj6qo ajU\">\n<h6><b>Speakers from &#8217;25-&#8217;26 included:<\/b><\/h6>\n<p>In the spring of 2026, Middle East Studies collaborated with a number of different departments and programs at the college to host the following guests:<\/p>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>&#8212; Abdulla Bayyari, a researcher at the Institute for Palestine Studies and a member of the editorial board for the\u00a0<i>Journal for Palestine Studies,\u00a0<\/i>offered a two-day workshop for faculty and students entitled, When Cities Become Targets: Urbicide and the Politics of Space in Palestine and a public lecture entitled &#8220;From the Sky to the Underground: Colonial Spatial Warfare and Palestinian Counter-Geographies.&#8221; He also met with several classes and interested students.<\/div>\n<div>&#8212; Zahi Zalloua, the Cushing Eells Professor of Philosophy and Literature, and the Director of Indigeneity, Race, and Ethnicity Studies at Whitman College, gave a public lecture entitled <i>Gaza and the Boomerang Effect. <\/i>He also met with several classes and interested students.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<h6><b><br \/>\nSpeakers from &#8217;21-&#8217;22 included:<\/b><\/h6>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"yj6qo ajU\">\n<div>In the spring of 2022, Middle East Studies collaborated with a number of different departments and programs at the college to host Dr. Yalda Hamidi, Assistant Professor, Department of Gender and Women&#8217;s Studies, Minnesota State University, Mankato who gave a public lecture on the intersection between gender and politics in Iran.<\/div>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><b>Speakers from &#8217;17-&#8217;18 included:<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hakim Abderrezak from the University of Minnesota&#8217;s Department of French and Italian will give a talk entitled <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;Burning the Sea, the Refugee Crisis and the Mediterranean Cemetery&#8221;<br \/>\n<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesday 1 November, Tomson Hall 280, 7.30pm<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><b>Speakers from &#8217;16-&#8217;17 included:<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Anver Emon of the University of Toronto, who gave a lecture on \u201cIslamic Natural Law Theories\u201d and &#8220;Islamic Law at the Borders: Jurisdiction and Sharia in International Child Abductions&#8221; at St. Olaf and Carleton. \u00a0Prof. Emon also met with students interested in Middle East Studies and Religion and International Law from both colleges and held a workshop for faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Mitri al-Raheb of Dar al-Kalima College in Bethlehem, who gave a lecture on Religion and Political Disagreement in the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Steven Caton of Harvard University, who gave lectures on &#8220;The Ethnography of Film Industries in the Middle East&#8221; and &#8220;Up the Creek: Land, Water, and Development in Dubai&#8221; at St. Olaf and Carleton. \u00a0Prof. Caton also met with students from both colleges and held a workshop for faculty.<\/span><\/p>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><\/h6>\n<h6><b>Speakers from &#8217;15-&#8217;16 included:<\/b><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Professor Amr Hamzawy from the American University in Cairo\/Stanford University, who gave a talk on Authoritarianism in Egypt, the visit of Jaylani Hussein from the Minneapolis chapter of the Council on American and Islamic Relations who gave a talk on Islamophobia and government-community relations in Minneapolis, and the visit of Professor Nadav Shelef from the University of Wisconsin at Madison who gave a talk on Nationalism in Israeli politics.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!-- begin-migrated-from-panel-builder --><!-- end-migrated-from-panel-builder --><\/p>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Speakers from &#8217;25-&#8217;26 included: In the spring of 2026, Middle East Studies collaborated with a number of different departments and programs at the college to host the following guests: &#8212;
