Music Department Week 1 Information


ALL AUDITIONS for choral and instrumental music ensembles will be held online.

Auditioning students should expect to find information about this process through their St. Olaf email from the music department.

ENSEMBLES First-Year students are welcome to audition for:

  • St. Olaf Band
    (meets Monday 3:15–4:45 p.m., Tuesday 4:30–6 p.m., and Thursday 4:50–6:15 p.m.)
  • Norseman Band
    (meets Monday 4:50–6 p.m., Wednesday and Friday 4:30–6 p.m.)
  • St. Olaf Orchestra
    (meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 4:30–6 p.m.)
  • St. Olaf Philharmonia
    (meets Tuesday 3:15–5:15 p.m. and Thursday 3:45–5:45 p.m.)
  • Manitou Singers
    (first–year women; meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3:15–4:15 p.m.)
  • Viking Chorus
    (first-year men meets Monday and Wednesday 4:30–5:30 p.m., and Thursday 4:50–5:50 p.m.)
  • Chamber Singers
    (meets Tuesday, 3:10 p.m.–4:20 p.m. and Thursday, 3:45–4:45 p.m.)
  • Collegiate Chorale
    (women only, no audition required; meets Tuesday 6–7 p.m.)
  • Collegium Musicum
    (meets Tuesday 6:30–8:30 p.m.)
  • Jazz Ensembles
    (three ensembles for one hour each; meets Monday and Wednesday 7–10 p.m.)
  • Handbell Choirs
    (two ensembles; meets Tuesday 3:45–4:55 p.m. or Tuesday 5:05–6:15 p.m.)

TRANSFER STUDENTS may audition for all of the above (except Manitou Singers and Viking Chorus), plus the St. Olaf Choir (meets Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday 4:30–6 p.m. and Thursday 4:50–6:15 p.m.); St. Olaf Cantorei (meets Tuesday and Thursday 3:50–4:50 p.m. with weekend time TBD); and the St. Olaf Chapel Choir (meets Monday, Wednesday, and Friday 3:10–4:15 p.m.).


All incoming music majors who have not taken the music theory and aural skills placement exam will need to contact Justin Merritt at

The written portion of this exam is designed to take no more than an hour to complete and the sight singing portion will take no more than five minutes.

NOTE: Any student who does not take this exam will automatically be placed in a section of Music 112.


All music majors are expected to attend a Zoom meeting on Monday, August 17, at 8 AM, with David Carter (Vice-chair) and others. This meeting will provide general information about the department, degrees offered and other details. The link for this meeting is:

Music lesson requests and registration is handled by the Music department, not the Registrar’s Office.  If you are interested in music lessons, please complete the appropriate Music Lesson Request form listed below and hit submit.  If we have availability in the performance studies studios, we will register and notify you of your studio placement.  Please note that there is an additional music lesson fee of $565 per semester for .25 credit music lessons that will be added to your tuition statement.  There will be no refund of the lesson fee if you choose to drop the music lesson after the 6th day of classes, Thursday, August 27, 2020.

Contact Holly King, Music Department instrumental music coordinator ( 123) to be assigned an instrument. Instrument requests will only be filled for students enrolled in official St Olaf Music Ensembles or St Olaf Private Lessons.
