Small Mammal Species Found on the St. Olaf Campus and Surrounding Natural Areas

Rodentia
Cricetidae

Meadow Vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus) – Common. Found in prairie Restored in 1993, 1998, 2002 (lower and taller vegetation) and 2004. Also found in the reed canary grass along the soccer fields, wet woodline, and near Skoglund pond.

Prairie Deer Mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus bairdii) – Uncommon. Found in prairie restored in 2002 and 2004.

White-Footed Mouse (Peromyscus leucopus) – Rare . Found in the reed canary grass along the wet woodline.

Dipodidae
Meadow Jumping Mouse (Zapus hudsonius) – Common . Found in the reed canary grass near Skoglund pond, along the soccer field, and along the wet woodline. Also found in the prairie restored in 2002 (taller vegetation).

Muridae
House Mouse (Mus musculus) – Rare. Found in the prairie restored in 2002.

Masked Shrew (Sorex cinereus) – Common. Found in prairie restored in 1998, 2002 (taller vegetation) and 2004. Also found in the reed canary grass along the wet woodline and soccer fields.

Short-Tailed Shrew (Blarina brevicauda) – Common. Found in prairie restored in 1998 and 2004. Also found in the reed canary grass along the soccer field.
