Wood ducks are tree cavity nesters. We have 8-10 wood duck houses erected in trees on campus near wetlands and have 3-5 brrods of wood ducks most years.
Young wood ducks are precocial birds, thus they are born ‘ready to go,’ and are able to jump down from their nest tree and follow their mother to the water. Wood duck ducklings can often be seen on campus following their mother from the nest to the water as in the pictures to the right and below.
