St. Olaf among top producers of U.S. Fulbright faculty scholars

St. Olaf College is one of the top producers of Fulbright faculty scholars among liberal arts colleges across the nation.

Three faculty members were selected for the 2022-23 Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program, putting St. Olaf among the top three baccalaureate institutions on this year’s list along with Kenyon College and Bates College. The St. Olaf faculty members named Fulbright scholars this year are Professor of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science Jill Dietz, who is using the Fulbright award to conduct research and work in Hungary; Associate Professor of Sociology and Anthropology Vivian Choi, who is using the award to support research and work in South Korea; and Visiting Assistant Professor of English Brett DeFries, who is using the award to support research and work in Brazil.

“Being named as a Top Producing Institution is a great honor for St. Olaf, and it is a testament to the college’s talented and remarkable faculty,” says Associate Director of Government, Foundation, and Corporate Relations Melissa Flynn Hager ’81. “By participating in the Fulbright program, which prioritizes international sharing and understanding, these three professors will not only further their research interests, but they will bring fascinating perspectives back to the St. Olaf students they teach.”

Each year the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) announces the top producing institutions for the Fulbright Program, the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. The Chronicle of Higher Education publishes the lists annually.

Fulbright is the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. It is also among the largest and most diverse exchange programs in the world. Since its inception in 1946, more than 400,000 participants from all backgrounds and fields — including recent university graduates, teachers, scientists, researchers, artists, and others from the United States and over 160 other countries — have participated in the Fulbright Program.

Fulbright alumni work to make a positive impact on their communities, sectors, and the world, and have included 41 heads of state or government, 62 Nobel Laureates, 89 Pulitzer Prize winners, 78 MacArthur Fellows, and countless leaders and changemakers who carry forward the Fulbright mission of enhancing mutual understanding around the world.
